JimC
I apologize if this has been asked a gazillion times...I did a search that didn't turn up anything. Basically, I was wondering if anyone knew when, or even if, General International is planning to start selling the Excaliburs again. I am just getting back into sawing and am using my old Dremel 1680. I would really like to upgrade to an EX-21 or something comparable. Thanks. NC Scroller
This was posted on Facebook yesterday 11/16/2016 by Janette Square. She is a world famous Intarsia artist. "I know a few people have inquired about the availability of the Excalibur scroll saws. Today I sent Ray at Seyco an e-mail asking about it. He now also has the new JET scroll saws listed for sale on his site. Here is Ray's response. Hopefully this will answer some, but I'm sure not all of your questions. My comment to this would be that if Ray is selling it - he will stand behind it - regardless of the brand.Hi Janette. Excalibur's are not available. They are not saying anything at General and we are not into speculating so we are just going our own way. Jet is made for Jet and General has nothing to do with them. They are link drive but very different features. Jet is a good saw, good company behind it and both perform well. Excalibur's unique FEATURES will be back soon but probably with a different name. We have plenty of parts in stock and source for future supply. As for as sharing on internet, I have nothing but here-say and that we avoid repeating. Seyco was here long before General bought Excalibur and I can say with authority (barring unforeseen catastrophes) we will be here long after they are gone.---Ray SeymoreSEYCO, The Scroll Saw Specialists, INC.(800)462-3353ray@seyco.com" WayneMahler and Scrolling Steve

JimC
Thank you for passing that along, Scott. I guess I should be considering other options. Maybe the Jet or a DeWalt 788...it seems a lot of scrollers here like them.
Frank Pellow
What a terrible end for a great local company! The original Excalibur company was located about 20 kilometres away from my home in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. They got bought out about 10 years ago then the company that bought them got bought out, then that company (whoever they may be?) screwed up BIG TIME. I'm happy to say that my EX-30 was made locally. It's a great machine! Scrolling Steve
hotshot
Regardless of who is manufacturing the Jet "version", the heart of that saw is still Excalibur, at least by design. I wouldn't be surprised if the front piece on the arms of that saw couldn't be switched out to make a traditional Ex. If General (or DMT Holdings) has financial issues and can no longer purchase new stock, that would be a shame. However, I would note that Jet isn't the only one selling their own branded version of EX. As a matter of fact, Axminster, Carbatec, and Pegas scroll saws are still available in other parts of the world. In case some of you have never seen these, take a look: Since all these are available right now, I wonder why Seyco didn't source these. Maybe this will be his source of parts should EX not resurrect. Edited November 18, 2016 by hotshot
JimC
Thanks. I had read some stuff on the Axminster sold in the UK but I have never heard of the other two. I will check them out but I'm guessing they would be hard to find in the US.
don in brooklin on
In Canada there is now Excelsior . Quote The new Excelsior 21" Scroll Saw is our replacement for the almost impossible to find Excalibur 21" Scroll Saw. This saw is not a knock off, as it is being manufactured to the same specifications by the same factory that was manufacturing the Excalibur Scroll Saw line. Comes with five 5†pinless blades, foot switch, Spare blade tension lever kit and adjustment hex key The line is being handled by King Canada. Not sure if available in USA. Price is $999 Cdn. ($750USD)
Frank Pellow
That good to know Don. But, when you say the 'same factory', I assume that you must mean the same non-Canadian factory that manufactured the Excalibur after they were bought out by General International. Dave Monk
The jet looks like a good saw but I will not buy one because you can't top feed with it. I am not interested in bottom feeding.dave

Frank, get over it, General hasn't built a scroll saw in Canada for years. It's time to move on. Len
hotshot
So, since General (or DMT) is licensing the design out so widely, wonder if Ray at Seyco has considered doing a "Seyco EX-21" Not sure what kind of volume he would have to purchase in. I suspect all these saws are running off the same line, so it would just be a matter of changing up the paint scheme.
JimC
Don, I did check out the Excelsior and the price, after the currency conversion, was pretty good (better than the Excalibur). The problem with that saw would be the cost of shipping such a heavy crate from Canada to the southeast US.
Frank Pellow
Len, General never did. Sommerville Design and Manufacturing did.

hotshot
Since we are all in the trivia mode, Sommerville also produced all the Dewalt Type 1 788s in Canada. Of course Tom Sommerville originally designed both the EX and 788s. I wish he would have stayed in the scroll saw game, continuing to innovate. hawkeye10
You would think a company like Woodcraft would pick the EX up and maybe market it as the Woodriver brand. Man what a good idea. I am just so smart.

I am just so smart. Hawkeye, as it so happens, the only General International Location in the US happens to be in Murfreesboro, located at 760 Jessica St. If you get the inclination to drive by there, you might see if you can see anything going on, or if you see someone you could ask. Their are only about 4 folks that work there, and Scott Box was the manager, if they are still alive and kicking.
don in brooklin on
I have some issues with my EX-21 tension lever. I decided I better get a replacement just in case. I called Montreal and could get one for $11 cdn versus 15 us at Seyco. I went ahead and ordered and they said it would be shipped UPS and the cost would be $17. WOW I asked if it could be ship via the post office and he was going to check. It probably would be same price as Seyco all in. I think Seyco is a little different but I went ahead anyways. I asked the part guy and he confirmed that there will not be anymore Excaliburs. He wasn't sure how long they would be open for parts but no word yet. Hopefully King Canada will stock parts. Don
