Western Frames

Those look great, Gator.  Next I'm at the wood store I getting some of the cedar.  I need to make a bunch of frames...

a lot have seem to like my western frames so maybe i can give something to someone who haven't found out about this trick

okay i bought 1x4 x8" western rough cedar $4.29 each spit a bunch in half.

then set fence and ripped sides about 1.125 got 3 out of each 8'  then ripped  

dado to accept picture and glass. i glued edge of the 1 3/4" piece and placed 1.125

i air nailed it with 1" brads. after i made some patterns and laid out a long and short

piece for making 11"x14" frame. glued edges pop 4 staples 2 each side. then hit edges

with orbital sander to knock slivers off. now to make them old. get 2 individual pieces of

0000 steel wool and gallon of whit vinegar and plastic seal-able tube that will hold 2

gallons. pour vinegar and steel wool and close up for at least 2 days. open stir if its all

dissolved add 1 gallon water to mixture. now paint all expose surfaces get them wet

. let them set over night add hangers that's it. now i hear it only works in western cedar

and some times you will see orange spots i touch them with liquid again and they get less bright.

Thanks for the detailed tutorial on frames. Those are nice sizes. I've just made some small ones so far. I used the vinegar/steel wool formula on red oak and it immediately turns it black. Cheap ebony!

Gator, thanks for the mini tutorial, this method of darkening has been around for years. We used to use this method, but we got away from it. It does work on other woods, we mostly used white pine and sometimes even spruce.

cool will try different woods i hear it wouldnt work but never tried it

Your local fencing company may even give you a better deal on the cedar, worth a try!

I get to dumpster raid at one here; sometimes shorts; but usable and FREE! Sometimes even long, narrower strips. Easy to make frames from them.

Please put this some place on the forum so we can use the tips when we need to try.  Thanks for sharing will try it when I can.
