Back to Pattern Exchange Forum Pattern Library User Guidelines

    Welcome

Welcome to the Pattern Exchange forum.  Here, you can share patterns you have designed with fellow SSV members.  It is important that you only share patterns you designed yourself from copyright-free materials (see Copyrights below).  Please do not share patterns from other artists, even if they are free.  Instead, put a link to where someone can download the patterns for themselves.

Please be mindful of the User Guidelines, which also address many of these concerns.

    Pattern Library

We have a huge collection of amazing patterns in the Pattern Library that are free to our members.  These scroll saw patterns are neatly organized into categories, which makes it easy for folks to find something new to cut.  If you post a pattern in this Pattern Exchange forum, please also post it to the Pattern Library.  Better yet, upload it to the Pattern Library and link it in the forums.

    Third-Party Hosting

You may use a third-party hosting service to host your patterns. However, we encourage you to submit your patterns to the Pattern Library. Not only does it make your patterns easier to find, but it also helps this community grow. Besides, it's a great way to give back to the scroll saw community. If you choose to use a third-party hosting service, many of these services include BB Code to insert into your forum posts. You can use that code on this forum to insert thumbnail pictures of your patterns.

Pinups, Nudes, and Other Stumbling Blocks

Scroll Saw Village strives for a family-friendly atmosphere and tries to limit mature content. Minor language and non-nude pinups are allowed. Images that contain nudity or profanity may be offered in the forums, however, distribution of these images must be conducted privately through email/PM (see Private Pattern Distribution below). Scroll Saw Village will not host objectionable materials. Instead, you should host these files on your own website, email, or use a third-party hosting service to store your patterns. Please do not use thumbnail images in your posts if the subject matter is questionable.

Naturally, blatantly offensive, hateful, or mean-spirited patterns are not allowed.

A general guideline is that if you can see or hear it in a magazine or on network television, it is probably OK to post. If in doubt, just ask a moderator or the site admin.

    Private Pattern Distribution

There are times when a pattern designer wishes to control the distribution of their patterns. This can be for a number of reasons; subject matter (nudes, profanity, etc), track downloads, or as a limited-release offer. Each designer may approach it differently and have their own rules. But, typically the designer will make the offer in the forums in which you reply you are interested in the pattern. The designer will then email/PM you with the pattern or a link to the file location. Please do not post your email address in the forums. Spambots often scan websites looking for valid email addresses to add to their collection.

    Copyrights

Respecting the copyrights of other artists is a high priority for us. Please do not offer patterns that are copyrighted, derivative works, licensed or trademarked. Converting copyrighted photos, illustrations, logos, or other artworks into a scroll saw pattern is considered derivative work.

You may only share patterns that you have personally designed. Do not post patterns from other designers, even if credit is given.

Here is a rundown of some of the things you may or may not offer. This certainly isn't an exhaustive list, but should give you a good idea.

    Things you can offer:

    • Generic designs
    • Word art
    • Designs based on your own photos
    • Designs based on public domain/open source images
    • Designs based on public domain/open source clipart

    Things you cannot offer:

    • Cartoon characters
    • Professional sports logos (or semi-professional)
    • University sports logos
    • Brands and Trademarks
    • Movie Posters/Logos
    • TV Logos
    • Album Covers
    • Copyrighted photographs
    • Copyrighted clipart

Let's have some fun! Let the pattern-making begin!
