wombatie
When cutting a project that is to be framed do you add a finish to it before you frame it? I never have and I have never thought about it until today, when I had a portrait ready for framing that was 3mm poplar ply and I wondered if I should or not. Interested to hear your views. Lucky2
Marg, I always finish the cutting, and then frame it with the frame prefinished also. If you don't finish it this way, the two pieces won't be stuck together by finishing product that will act as a glue. Len

amazingkevin
Do them separate sounds good to me too!
LarryEA
Separate! Unless the frame is part of the scrollwork. Or you want it to be. Finished together means you can not use a different frame.
Rob Roy
Do them separate Marg. If you put finish on when it's in the frame, capillary action will draw the finish under the rebate in the frame which, when dry, will prevent you getting your cutting out of the frame later. Just my humble opinion Marg. Rob Roy. LarryEA
Phantom Scroller
Marg I would simple spray lacquer the portrait and depending on if you make the frame lacquer that as well separately Rob Roy
wombatie
OK what about if you buy a frame and you keep the glass in, what do you do then? Sorry just interested. Marg
dansnow
If I'm using a glass in front of the item I don't finish it. If the frame and item are to be glued together I finish them as one piece otherwise I finish them separately.
ike
I always finish my work because I cut portraits on oak plywood and it brings out the grain and they really look good. IKE
Phantom Scroller
Marg I never put glass in my bought frames and keep the glass for frames I make, that's just me, do what pleases you! Roly
