justjimmyb Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 I need some advice on trivets. What type of wood should I use? I use watco oil on all my other projects can I use it on trivets? Also is there a problem with the heat from pots and pans burning trivets? Thanks Jimmy jabr850626@aol.com Quote
Travis Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 I'm not sure how a poly would hod up to the heat, so I'd say oil finish is the way to go. I'd just make sure the oil is fully cured, though. You don't want oil to be ruining any fine linens. I'd imagine any kind of wood would work. I'd stay away from sappy woods like pine. I think over time, the wood color will change due to the heat. But at the same time, I think that's what adds charm to the trivet. I think it would be a gradual process though....unless you pan is red hot! Quote
Kepy Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 I have made a lot of trivets and most any hard wood will work. I usually use oak, walnut or cedar as have them available. After cutting I finish by soaking in mineral oil then let drip dry. Once they are fairly dry, I buff them with brown paper bag which gives a nice sheen. I use them and they work fine although I have given some as gifts and they usually wind up on the wall rather than being used. Quote
wood-n-things Posted August 9, 2009 Report Posted August 9, 2009 they usually wind up on the wall rather than being used. Isn't that funny. I made several for folks last year and visited some this summer and most had them hangin in their kitchens... Quote
