plaining wood

ike

Recommended Posts

last evening I was planning wood that I had drying for over a year. I had 17 4 ft.  X 8 in ash 16 ft. Chery and20 ft. walnut all 5/4X 8 in I get this at the l saw mill near my home it took me about 3 hours  I pained  all pieces down to 1/2 inch thickness.  If you have a planer or access to one it's a good deal. Most mills will let you have the end pieces if you ask. What is your favorite wood to work with ?

Unfortunatly I don't have a saw mill any where near me and on the west coast we don't have all the neat woods you all have futher east.  We do have alot of black walnut in our area, but little means of milling it without having to haul it a long ways.

Hard to say my favorite wood.  Depend on what type of woodworking I am doing at the moment.  I do like currly maple, cherry, english walnut, etc.

Oh, heavy question.

I guess I don't have a favorite

Mahogany, easy to cut, beautiful and elegant...just hard to come by.

For beauty, Tiger Maple.

Oak I love for water scenes...Oak is nice to work with

Walnut is beautiful.

Maybe Ash

Ike, some sawmills here get more  $ money $ for wood chips than for lumber.

Thats because some mfg. plants are using wood chips to produce energy.

So most sawmills are chipping "ALL" scrap.

Becoming hard to get unless you know someone.

No favorites here. I just love to work with all different types of wood. I have a friend that is knocking down some mulberry trees and I am thinking about taking those to a sawmill.

I also have a neighbor that is taking down a walnut tree and there is a hard maple tree across the street that is dying and I hope to get that one.

Now if I could just find some big cedar trees I would be in seventh heaven. :D  :D :D  :D

We have sawmills around here, but the wood they mill is generally either fir or larch. Not great for scrolling. Unfortunately there are no local stands of hardwoods. Likewise my choice of scrolling woods is limited to whatever the local hardware store is selling. I recently cut some cherry and liked it a lot. I was using poplar to do some of my scrolling, but just switched to select pine. Looks about the same and is a little cheaper.

I'm pretty opportunistic. Give me free wood, and I'll make it work.
