heppnerguy
OK, guys and gals, I have seen where many of you have been thinking about doing an intarsia piece but a little hesitant because it maybe looks like something you might not be successful at completing it. Let me set your mind at ease and encourage you to give it a try. The photo of the dolphin intarsia is the first intarsia piece I did. I looked at some patterns and decided if I was to make a really easy one to try, I would know right away if it was doable of not, for me. I drew up this 6 piece item and I even cut it on my bandsaw as I did not have good experiences with my scrollsaw from previous efforts. ( Later as I got interested in pursuing my new found in interest in intarsia, I learned about using the right blades and some other tips I picked up on line, and I found success with my scrollsaw and never looked back after that} So if I could make this simple intarsia piece and didn't even use my scrollsaw, think what you could produce with your skill on your scroll saw?? so make a pattern of this simple dolphin and try it, I am confident that you will discover that you too can do this.. EVEN YOU. ROLY. Good luck to all, if you prefer, you can PM and i will send you this pattern. Clayton717
I agree, it's not as hard as it looks. It can be time consuming. There are many simple patterns out there, check your library for books with patterns.
spirithorse
Nice job, Dick, I think it would be even harder on the band-saw so, the scroll-saw should make it even easier. I've done a lot of intarsia but, all on the scroll-saw. God Bless! Spirithorse

Scrappile
I'm going to give it a go soon. I've been collecting wood for a pattern I have and as soon as I get some of this scrolling out of my system I on it. Don't expect much. Phantom Scroller
Dick it's not that I don't want to try it it's just a time factor, it takes so much time all that shaping and dremeling and sanding and if you don't have the coloured wood the staining. It's the only reason. perhaps when I retire I might have more time but talking to people who have already retired sounds like there's not much chance of that. God Bless stay safe. wombatie
I have wanted to try Intarsia for a long time now but I never seen to have the time to have a go. I always seen to go one step forward and two steps back. But I am determined that one day I am going to do an Intarsia. Marg
ike
I tried it a long time ago. I did a rooster out of 3/8 pine. This was a trial . It didn't look like much when I put it together with out gluing so I painted it and It looked all right. The main draw back for me was it was time consuming. Now that I have more time on my hands I will try it again.

Roly Ok guys.. this one is so easy.. I could do this one in under 1 hour, It would take about 15 minutes max to cut and another 15 minutes max to sand and shape and then 30 minutes max to cut mounting board and glue it on. How does that take retirement to do ???????????????? No excuses just go for it.. Dick heppnerguy

Dick heppnerguy Its not retirement that is the problem because I am already retired. Its the time I have had that many orders this year that I no sooner finish one when I get another one to start. I have not had time to do the other things on my to do list this year. But hopefully next year will be the year I do it. Marg

trailfndr
My first piece was the 37" eagle from Judy Gale Roberts,(see photo) that I made during an Intarsia beginners class. The instructor looked at me and said" you don't start small, do you?" I made it out of pine, and stained it. The only tools used were the scrollsaw and a benchtop belt sander. The class was 2 hours a week, for 6 weeks, and that's the only time I worked on it. The instructor simply explained HOW to cut and shape, and left me to do my own thing from there. Its not as hard as people think it is. Most of you already use a scrollsaw ( I had NO experience with one when I started) so following a line is easy. Even if your first piece is a segmentation, you will quickly graduate to full Intarsia. My second piece was a motorcycle from Sawbird.com I also stained this piece, and that was the last time I stained a piece unless it was to enhance the project, or a customer asked me to stain it. Yes, I made mistakes along the way, but for each mistake, I learned more and more. I have now been doing Intarsia for 2 years, and have made over 75 pieces, and I work full time on top of that. If I can do it, ANYONE can. Edited November 11, 2014 by trailfndr

heppnerguy
I started with intarsia because what I knew as scrolling did not interest me. Intarsia is not all the hard, no inside cutting and sanding takes care of most 'not fitted well' pieces. I hope more will not put it aside and give it a try. I think they will all enjoy it. Scrolling experience makes the task way easier because accuracy in the cuts, saves the more difficult task of sanding. I found it is quicker to re-cut a piece then to spend a lot of time, trying to 'make it fit' I hope to see those even considering making an intarsia piece, to try one as soon as you can. You will surprise yourself. Lee is a good example of where you can go with it, if you only try Dick heppnerguy
