Jim Finn
I found a 15" Jet scroll saw that was made in 1988 on Craig's list for $15. I use this saw more than my others. I also bought a 25" Hegner that was made in 1986 that I use for larger projects. Paid $600 for that one. Creig's List is a good place to look. Wilson's Woodworking
http://memphis.craigslist.org/tls/4741201981.html Take a look at this one. Not much more than one of the cheeper saws you would buy in a box store.

rjR
I think that you will like the 788! The newer ones have a tilted stand that I do NOT like! Mine still has the flat stand! I have abused my 788 a lot! Two complaints about it! Original light was junk and very poorly located--got in the way! The tools free clamps --were hard to use with arthritis! Bigger knobs -- I made a over knob-- then some how over tightened them. I then modified them to actually use tools to tighten-- a few years back now! It was to be a temporary fix while my new parts came! Still using it that way--seem to be used to it and like it.
ike
I had the same problem with my DW 788 and I cured it by taking the screw out and put some anti siege on the threads and it cured the problem
