LarryEA
My Delta 40-690 (Like a DW788) was running normally until I shut it off. Now it will not turn on. I checked the brushes which are a little over 1/2 inch long. My booklet says replace at 3/8 inch so they should be ok. I reset connectors to switch. It ran. I turned it off and it would not turn back on. I took covers off and all I see is PC board. Any suggestions? I bought it from Sears in June 2010. heppnerguy
I had this kind of a problem when it was really cold in my shop a couple of years ago. for some reason , it just started up again and I have not had a problem with it since. Maybe you could take the on/off switch loose and jump the wires and if that makes the saw run, it is in your switch.. lightly taps the motor.. Oh and one thing more. manually move the saw arms up and down. maybe there is something sticking inside.the saw.. No cost to try it.. good luck, I wish i was there to help you.... Phantom Scroller
Don't own one but as Dick says it could be damp on the connections or the plug/wiring on the machine itself could be loose I know you said you checked connections is there a plug that goes into the machine from the plug in the socket might be loose. Rob Roy
Hello Larry. Could you have a dirty commutator on the motor (where the brushes run). I've had that problem a couple of times. Worked fine after a clean. Hope you get it working. Rob Roy. LarryEA

amazingkevin
Mine does this all the time and finding the problem the first time was a nightmare .But when i found it it was an easy fix.My foot switch gets jamed open from all the small chunks of wood falling off the dewalt table.I just have to pick in up shake all the chunks out and im good to go.LOL P.S. i use a modified sewing machine foot switch.clam type. Scrappile
My DeWalt did this once, I blew out the on/off switch with the compressor, like I did on my lathe when it did the same thing. It was just dust in the switches. Hope it is that easy of a fix for you. LarryEA
LarryEA
I checked the fuse. I have all the side plates and covers off. Now I have to get my Bro-in-Law over to check power to switch. I could try Dicks suggestion ( take the on/off switch loose and jump the wires and if that makes the saw run, it is in your switch) ..if I trusted myself to do it right. Well, it is either the switch or the motor.........(I think)
bandaideman
If none of that works take her out on the down movie, dinner, hand holding etc. Get home and see if it will turn on . never know may work. If not at least your mind is off the problem for a while and saw a good movie, had nice dinner. Sorry I am not always all there in the head. Multifasited
Sounds like you need a meter , HF ,has some cheap ones that work swell ,being you have it a part start at the power supply and follow all the way thru at every junction ,when you loose it ,it's from there back to your last good test .The sw. only has half the circuit jumping will not shock you ,unless you make contact with the insulated leg .electricity is like water in the fact you start at the source and follow to the blockage ,in this case the open bridge ! clip your black wire on your meter to a ground screw and test with red probe .They make a contactless tester ,that works very well about $10.00 work well simple instructions on package ! Good Luck ! LarryEA
rjR
Fuses can LOOK GOOD and be blown! meter the fuse, not eyeball it. All the above advice is excellent. I am sure you can find and fix the problem! H-F even sometimes has free meters in their ads. I have checked H-F meter against a Fluke(Spendy meter brand=Professional quality) and it was within 2 % on everything I checked with both! Resistances and voltages AC & DC. Good Luck! Check your cords and the outlets they plug into, might be bad extension cord end or wall out let going out. LarryEA

KurtP
I had the same problem a few times and did what Scrappile suggested and used the compressor to blow the dust out of the switch and it worked. After the last time it happened I bought foot switch and haven't had the issue since. LarryEA
ike
IF YOU HAVE IT FUSED CHANGE THE FUSE, SOMETIMESTHE FUSE WILL ALOW THE METER TO CHECK OK BUT NOT ENOUGH JUCE GETTING THRU TH START THE SAW, I HAD THT PROBLEM ONCE,

New Guy
I covered the switch on my saw with tape in the on position to keep the dust out and use the foot switch only. Got the switch at HF. LarryEA
LarryEA
Paul, Yes that looks exactly right. I took my switch apart and the cause of the problem was extra, extra fine collection of dust. I cleaned it up but made a amateur mistake. Didn't notice how to put it back together. I made a guess and blew a fuse. Now I need a fuse.
amazingkevin
i drilled holes in my switch so its self cleaning.
Scrappile
Next time try blowing it out before you take it apart. Use a compressor or a can of air. That is all I have ever done. I have only had one switch go bad on a piece of my equipment and that was on my HF dust collector. I kew they have a history of switches going bad so I took that on apart. It was melted. Edited November 10, 2014 by Scrappile
JustLarry
On my 40-690 I run the shop vac brush nozzle over the switch each day when through cutting. I also have the HF foot switch. Some with foot switch turn saw switch on and put clear tape over it. I still use the saw switch since I do not like my foot hitting the foot switch when I am changing blades as that tends to knock on the knuckles a little too much. Part of my shutdown is to vacum dust of myself and the saw. (If I said so far no problem, saw probably would not start tomorrow. So I wont say that.)
