Yet another NOOB !

Hi everyone in scrolling nirvana. Just retired last January from the phone company, and can finally play with all my hobbies. I have been doing woodworking, stained glass, pen turning and different types of jewelry on the lathe. So scroll work is very interesting to me as related to sign making.

I look forward to making some new friends here and learning lots of techniques to boot. Profile is coming.

Thanks for the warm welcome and I'm sure it's gonna be fun here. I haven't picked out a saw yet, but have reading lots of reviews that should help with my selection. I always believe in buying the best you can afford as my workshop will show. I'm considering the Delta 40-694 which apparently is very similar to the Dewalt 788. If anyone would care to give their 2 cents on these, I'd like to hear it.

Welcome Skip. You sound a lot like myself. I started scrolling after I retired and have grown to a point where my shop is one of my favorite places to be. Only draw back to that is my bride of 53 years stays in the house when I am scrolling. I make most of my things for her and I bought  her an Ipad so she stays entertained as well. I have not used the saw you are talking about but I do have the DeWalt and an RBI saw. My thought is this saw you are looking at will probably serve you well. Many good scrollers here in The Village have lessor and cheaper saws that they use on a daily basis and they turn our excellent work. it is kind of like a guy can put new brakes on his car with imported tools as well as someone can with Snapon tools. Some are nicer to work with and last longer than others. I like that you have a lot of hobbies which means you are probably not one to sit all day and watch TV.

Do log in as often as you can and you will quickly get to know many of the regulars here and before you know it, you too will be one of the regulars. Just be careful, as not only is scrolling addictive but so is The Village.  We are one big, world wide, and very friendly, talented and helpful people like you will have a hard time finding any other place. I also would like to suggest, as i do to a lot of new people here, take time to go the the 'coffee house' because a number of our regulars hang out there just for the connection with other members and have a lot of fun sharing their stories and jokes and whatever else comes up. this is just there for the fun of all.

I have a Delta 40-69? , bought it in 2010 and just recently had minor problem.

A little bit of fine dust got in the switch, once I cleaned that out all was fine.

I caused a problem and blew a fuse (saw fuse) when I put the switch back on.

So, four years and had a little dust in the switch, I consider that good.

Yes it is a twin of the 788

I just purchased an older 40-690 off Craig’s list that was like new. I only have one complaint about the saw. It made scrolling so much more pleasant that I just want to keep cutting. One of these days I suppose I will have to stop and finish a few of my projects. I have a 14" Hegner and an old Dremel that both set in the corner of the room that I will probably get rid of one of these days so I can buy a second 40-690 for a backup saw. Yes I am getting spoiled with this saw   it just runs and cuts so nice.

I cut a snowman intarsia with it the other night and was amazed how square it cut at a much faster feed than my old saws. :D :D  :D

Oh by the way, Welcome to the village. Kick back and relax, have a cup of Joe (or beverage of your choice) and enjoy looking around the village. Post pictures of your work and your shop. I would love to see your lathe work also.
