Spalted Maple Oval Bowl

I had a small piece of spalted maple ( 4 x 7 x 3/4 ) left over from another project.  I decided to make a bowl from it.  The bowl is 3 3/4 inches wide x 6 1/2 long and 3 inches tall.  The wall thickness started off at 1/4 inch and is more like 3/16 inch thick now.  I sealed the bowl with tung oil and then top coated it with shellac.

you photos give the impression that I am looking at different bowls. the second photo makes the bowl look quite a bit taller than the first photo and the third photo gives the appearance of having only 3 layers instead of 4 as it appears in the other photos.  I have found the same thing happens when I take different angle photos of one of my pieces. Not sure why they can come out so different looking, just do to the angle or lighting of a photo but they sure do.

That is a really cool bowl.. i like the shape, color and character of the bowl a lot

Awesome bowl!!!!!!! I need to make a few myself but I can’t come close to this. Beautiful wood and a great job done.

Danny sure you can.  It really is about the sanding.  I make the bowl and sit in my shop and watch a movie while I sand before I know it the bowl has been sanded and is ready for the finish.  I seal my projects generally with a 60/40 tung oil to mineral spirits mix give it an hour then wipe it down good and let it sit overnight.  Then wipe once more before starting to put on the finish.  Generally I use shellac as it is easy and the solvent is denatured alcohol and not something extremely flammable like lacquer thinner. Multiple light coats do the trick.  Either spray it on or brush it on both should be light coats.  I have a piece of worn 440 I use between coats to knock the roughness you sometimes get between coats.  Above all have fun!
