dansnow
My son and I are working on a special order articulated dragon for a customer, and I plan to use wenge for the wing bones to give contrast to the maple wings. Any tips, tricks, warnings for the more experienced out there? I've never used this wood before, about all I know is I like its looks, and its dang hard. wdkits1
Wenge is a fairly difficult wood to work with. It can be splintery so caution should be taken when working with it. I got a fairly small splinter embedded and it got infected within a couple of hours. Don't know if it was just me or not but I now take extra care when working with it. dgman
Wenge is a very dense wood. it is hard to cut but finishes to a beautiful dark brown to almost black color. as mentioned it is very brittle and splintery. use a reveres tooth blade or a Flying Dutchman Ultra reverse blade. this will help with splintering on the back side. Sand a round over on the top edge to prevent splinters. you will be pleased with the color when finished!
dansnow
The plan is to stack cut the 2 sets of wing bones from 1/8th stock with a 1/4" thick sacrificial backer board. Dust mask will be worn.
