EnglishRich Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 Hello all, New to the forum and to scroll saws as an adult. Played with one in school at 11 a fair bit and loved it. Decided to invest in one this Christmas as I've got twin 14 month old boys and the price of pieces for the walls shocked me. I'm fairly handy and am working my way through redoing the finishing of the basement but am glad to have something to do besides chopping 2x4s. Don't think I'll be much use as far as contributing patterns and such but hopefully over time I can create something of interest. amazingkevin and Rob Roy 2 Quote

EnglishRich Posted January 6, 2015 Author Report Posted January 6, 2015 Hey guys, thanks for the welcome. My saw will probably be frowned upon but I chose it for two big reasons. It was $79 and it's portable so doesn't need a designated place as I can clamp it to my bench in the basement or garage as needed. http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-MS20-01-Moto-Saw-Variable-Compact/dp/B00AFELU6O Quote

LarryEA Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 You Have to make breakfast at least once in the first 30 days. Just go to the Coffee Shop and feed the hungry Scrollers. Coffee, tea and chai are a must. Other than that, as Hans said, if it makes sawdust and something to show, it's fine. Welcome.... EnglishRich 1 Quote

John (JC) Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 Welcome aboard Rich, Glad you are here and we are interested in seeing what you make (Pics ... Pics ... Pics). I pretty new to scrolling and have really made only a few things so far and they were just simple things - flat outlines like a very simple hat rack for my prospecting trailer of a mountain range near where I grew up in southern AZ. All my hobbies were put on hold for the last couple years as moved to Minnesota and am just really getting settled again. I am interested to see what wall art you create as I am working on a couple ideas for my trailer and office. Again, welcome aboard ... EnglishRich 1 Quote
EnglishRich Posted January 6, 2015 Author Report Posted January 6, 2015 Thanks again guys for the warm welcomes. Won't be starting any project for a couple of weeks as I have a hernia op on Friday but thought I'd join the forum early so I can read ideas and tips while I'm out of action as I'll be going stir crazy. wombatie Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 Welcome to the Village Rich. I'm Marg from Australia. As long as you can make saw dust and you are happy with it thats all that counts. Yes we do like to see photos and it doesn't matter how bad you think they are we will like them and if they are brilliant we will like them to. We are an easy bunch of people here and apart from scrolling we love to laugh so stop on by the Coffee Shop sometime and we may make you laugh too, but not too loud you may wake the twins and then your wife will not be happy with us. heppnerguy Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 Rich, It will be interesting to find out how well you like your new saw. I think the draw back on this saw is the small capacity (size of area you can cut ) will be a deterrent for you, but I really am not familiar with this unit. i am going to go back and read more on it, to make myself a little more familiar with it. Hope you heal quickly from your operation and are up and about soon. the scroll saw is something you can work on almost right away as it is not a big strain to sit at the saw. Way easier than swinging a hammer and cutting 2 X 4's. Dick heppnerguy EnglishRich 1 Quote
heppnerguy Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 Rich, After reading the stats and reviews, I would suggest that if you have not opened this saw, you might consider sending it back. It appears to be really too light duty to be rewarding to use. It only takes pinned blades and there were several reports of lack of power. The table is quite small and could restrict your ability to cut some of the things you will probably wish to cut in the near future. Not having the ability to use non pinned blades will quickly become a deterrent as well because it too can make a lot of patterns uncuttable for you. I understand the cost factor as i am retired and living on a limited income myself. Be I think you can do better for about the same price. a variable speed unit with the ability to use non pinned blades is a plus. Craigs list is also a great place to find a good used saw in your area. Just trying to help you a little. I am afraid you will be disenchanted with the saw you choose, very quickly. I am not trying to discourage you, it is just cheaper to spend the money for a saw once than two of three times down the line. Good luck and we are glad to have you on board. a big welcome to the Village. Come back often Dick heppnerguy EnglishRich 1 Quote
