dansnow
Got a question for you wood wizards out there. I've been commissioned to do a retirement plaque. The main part of the plaque will be based on a maltese style cross. The customer really likes the color of this cross, and I need to figure out if its a natural wood color or if it has been stained. Any thoughts folks? AlfrediaMum

MrsN
it could be a stain or could be natural. the grain pattern will sometimes tell you. There are a few exotic hardwoods that have nice deep orange/red colorings, Padauk and bloodwood are both bright when cut but settle down when exposed to uv light. Cherry has a nice red tone to it, espically if exposed to UV light (sunlight) for a while before finishing. It causes it to darken a bit. There are several nice red-toned stains available. check the stain aisle for something close. amazingkevin
Multifasited
ChecK the edges ,The end grain is most telling almost always is darker when stained.

dansnow
Thanks for the info guys The cherry I get is much more slight reddish brown to orange-ish in color than this. I certainly hope it's not blood wood because a) I would have to increase the price out of their budget, and b) I understand it's very hard, and really dulls cutting tools fast. I have a small scrap of cherry that I've stained with a red mahogany stain. When it dries I'll clear it and see how close it is. I think I might take the picture to my local Woodcraft store and if it is a stain they might be able to help me out.

Multifasited
Find an old furniture refinisher and repairer ,He can tell you more in five minutes than woodcraft can in a week !
trailfndr
While I know that wood comes in many different colors, that particular piece looks to me that it is stained. Something just looks off to me. I does not look like Bloodwood to me.
