browders Posted February 22, 2015 Report Posted February 22, 2015 I don't know how much of a problem this is, but I wanted to mention an article in our local paper today about cyber crime. An older couple recently had their IP address hacked by person(s) unknown. He is a part time real estate agent and she teaches at a local parochial school. A couple of weeks ago during early evening, there was a knock on their door. When they opened it, they were greeted by six law enforcement officers armed with a search warrant for their premises. Turns out that their IP address had come up in an investigation of a child pornography ring. After several hours of interrogation, the authorities left taking the computer with them. While the couple wasn't charged, his name was listed on the search warrant which later appeared in a newspaper elsewhere in the state. After approximately ten days, the officials determined that these people were not involved and issued a statement exonerating them. Too little too late. The couple has continued to be plagued with harassing phone calls and hateful emails. Authorities think that the IP address was hacked by someone outside the home who accessed it through their wifi connection. Bottom line, no matter where you live, rural or urban, lock down your wi fi with a proper password. You just never know. FYI Jim Lucky2 1 Quote

wombatie Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 About October last year my S P shut down my Internet and sent me a text to contact them, which I did. Someone had tried to hack into my account and change my password luckily my S P was on the ball. I changed passwords and all was sweet. I have a good idea who it was but no proof. Also around the same time someone got hold of my credit card details and spent $7000 on Internet charges. My bank shut off the account and sent me a text to contact them. They issued me with a new card and refunded the $7000 into my account. I love my bank and my S P. Marg keefie 1 Quote
