heppnerguy
I wanted to try and make one of these great pattern designs. I have enjoyed them from the first time I saw them and I could not figure out how to design one until I saw Travis's tutorial on it. I was working in a short time frame to finish it on that evening and I wanted to finish it before I went to bed. I got it designed and cut and my backer board cut and painted, leaving only to glue the backer board to the main piece. After I got that finished, I started to take a photo of it when I realized, in my haste that I had not done my First letter correctly ( leaving out the needed islands ) in my first initial of my name. But I wanted to post it here because of the little shamrock addition I put in my design. Just to share this idea with others. May some have done this type of thing but If so , I overlooked it or did not see it at all. so be careful, take your time when making a pattern and check out carefully before you cut the a pattern. Fishman
This happened to me once too when I was in a rush and not thinking on my first pattern. Now what I do is a neat little trick I came up with, that will work on most patterns. Not sure what program you use, but I would say they all have the Paint Bucket Tool. How it works is when you click in an area it will fill it up with what color you have chosen. It won't fill up any areas that are "blocked off" by lines. So after you're done with the pattern: pick a nice easy to see color (I use red), click somewhere on the background, and if everything fills up with the red that means it's all connected. If you're left with islands, that means you need to make a peninsula! I made a very quick video, with just some simple text. In it I show me using the paint bucket tool to reveal any islands, me fixing one of them, then using the tool again to show how it works. Figured it would help give you or anybody else a visual. Make sure to watch it in HD if you can. It's very simple, and can be used with most patterns one way or another as the premise is the same. It really can help eliminate the chance of an oversight. Hope it helps! bobscroll

wombatie
We all have done something in a rush and then when finished wondered what in blazes was I thinking. Slow and steady wins the race. Apart from the little boobo, it looks great Dick, I really like it. Marg
