OCtoolguy
I am VERY new to this so bear with me. I sprayed my wood with 3M77. After doing that, I found out that I was supposed to spray the pattern. Well, I used a heat gun to get the pattern off but that left me with a layer of stickem on the finished piece. I have tried sanding but that doesn't work so well. What can I use to clean off the glue? I have mineral spirits but I didn't want to chance it without checking here first. I'd hate to screw up my first major project. Thanks to all, Ray
bandaideman
mineral spirits would be a good choice. I did that at first but now put something on top of the wood then the pattern sprayed with glue. OCtoolguy
dgman
Yup, mineral spirits. Use a clean soft cloth wetted with mineral spirits and wipe it down, or put some in a spray bottle and spritz the project and wipe it down. I use this method to remove the pattern. OCtoolguy
Will this hurt the wood as far as taking a stain? I don't want to paint it. Ray
Scrolling Steve
Ray clean with mineral spirits and let dry ....should not interfere with your staining of the wood. Edited March 7, 2015 by Scrolling Steve
LarryEA
Will this hurt the wood as far as taking a stain? I don't want to paint it. Ray I assume you mean mineral spirits...no But the glue will have an effect on stain so ya gotta get it off. You 'could' soak and use a toothbrush and scrub it off. Mineral spirits is the best bet. JustLarry
Ray. Mineral Spirits(MS) or the cheaper Paint Thinner(PT) that states "100% Mineral Spirits" is the way to go. I use the Paint Thinner. Soft rag or soft bristle brush will remove the glue after it sits a bit. It will not interfere with staining the wood. Another trick MS or PT does is - wet the surface and you will get a sneak look at what the wood will look like after you apply finish. It will show any glue that is left on, bad sanded spots and the other general bad stuff you do not notice until after the finish is applied. Also is a way to remove the hidden sanding dust. Just wet and wipe off. Be careful on the fragile parts. Most of my cuttings get the PT treatment before the finish goes on. Use with lots of ventilation and hang the damp rag where it will dry. Note: I do not use the "low odor" PT as it tends to leave a white residue on the wood. I also try to remember to slip on the rubber gloves before I use the PT. Doug
Ray People put patterns on different ways. I am rather fixed on blue painters tape on the wood, then 3M 45 spray adhesive on the tape and then the pattern on top. You need to find what you are comfortable with. Whatever you do, I suggest you start with 3M 45 and then move up if you are not satisfied with it. 3M 77 is more expensive and I think a lot stronger than is needed and probably harder to clean up if it needs cleaned up. I have never had an issue with 3M 45. OCtoolguy
heppnerguy
Doug, You are correct that everyone has their own preference as to how to attach a pattern and i would have been in total agreement with you, until about a month ago when I decided to try the pattern directly on the wood, idea. What I discovered to my delight, was that method saved me a lot of time because the not having the blue tape on the wood was so much easier to get the pattern off the wood and if I am doing fret work, it a huge time saver. I was against this method due to that sticky residue that is left on the wood. With this method the pattern just falls off the wood, almost magical and then IF there is a little residue left on the wood , after removal, a quick swipe of mineral spirits take it right off. If you have not tried this, I would like to suggest that you give it a shot at least once to evaluate the process and see if you get the same results that I do. Scrappile
What Dick just said +1. I no longer use tape of any kind. And, you are fine. Mineral Spirits to clean, and let dry completely before finishing. Drying is the only draw back I see to Mineral Spirits. It dries slow. But, while it dries, I am cutting a new project! OCtoolguy
Thanks again to all of you for your input. I was reading in a prior thread about using Glad Cling Wrap on the wood prior to spraying on the adhesive. That sounds great too but I think that the more stuff you try the more confusing and time consuming it becomes. I learned a valuable lesson on my first project and that is NOT to spray the wood. From now on, I will spray the pattern. DUH!! It seems like the blue tape idea would be good except for that's another expense. I'm trying to find the best, cheapest way. I'm going to try the GWC because my wife has some in the drawer and I don't have to go buy it. I must say, this forum is a wealth of knowledge. Thanks again to everybody. Clayton717
I do the same as Dick and always have. I have never had a problem. A little mineral spirits on the paper will peel it right off, and a little more on the wood will remove any glue residue left over. Saves me time and the added expense of buying painters tape all the time.
tvman44
Mineral spirits and may have to do a little light sanding after it completely dries.
