Hello!

I am new to the scroll saw world and looking for resources and inspiration as I learn my new hobby. I started as a scrapbooker and sewer and I have found myself moving into the world of wood now thanks to Pinterest and a 1 year old niece. I have my father in law's old ryobi sitting in my garage on long term loan. It's not the prettiest or fanciest machine, but it's been good to me as I learn.

I started over the weekend by cutting a board in half, and then went to town making my first creation out of a scrap pine board. It was great fun and surprisingly similar to sewing! Just watch the needle, erm, I mean saw blade, and follow the line! :)

I've got so many projects I want to create and I'm excited to learn from those with lots of experience. Thanks for having me!

Thank you everyone for all the kind words! You guys have done it now, you are stuck with me for the long haul! ;)

I will be making a trip to get some better, harder woods in the next couple of days and I can't wait. My sister keeps sending me pictures of toys I need to make for my niece, and we all know how destructive kids can be. That pine won't cut it! :)

Now you have to fix breakfast. Just remember, anytime of the day, it's breakfast somewhere, and lunch, and supper.

Don't forget tea and chai and hot pepper juice for Kevin . ;)

Hi Amanda, welcome to the Village.  I'm Marg from Australia.  Don't worry you are not the only female here, we need to stick together against these men.  Yes scrolling is very much like sewing, which I was never very good at.    As soon as I sat next to a scroll saw I was hooked, just like you, that was 16 years ago and I still love it.  If you have any questions just ask, it doesn't matter how silly you think they are, ask, we have all asked them and still do in my case.  Make yourself at home

Hi Amanda, welcome!  I too am new to scrolling and only recently found this forum.  You won't find a more helpful, friendly group of folks.  Funny side note is that I started on an old Ryobi my Mother-in-law kindly donated to me.  Oh and because of Pinterest my Wife has found me more projects than I'll ever dream of having time to cut.

Josh that is too funny, I'm never one to turn down free tools! And yes pinterest is dangerous, I coud live ten lifetimes and still not complete all the things i've pinned.

Marg, I am all about sticking together, someone has to keep the crazy men in line!

Larry, I'm glad it's always breakfast somewhere because I sure as heck don't get out of bed in time for it in my time zone! :P

Welcome to The Village, Amanda. Funny you should mention the sewing similarity as that was what I discovered when I started scrolling too. I am not a sewer, but I usually set up my brides sewing machine for her or tune it up when things are not going well. I often tell people that scrolling is not difficult and is very similar to sewing. I say 'if you can sew, you can scroll'.  It is using a blade to cut apart pieces of wood and sewing is following a line on two pieces of material and joint the pieces. I am glad you have found us. If there are any questions or doubts you may have about anything please take a moment and ask. I am always surprised at the things I often learn when someone new to scrolling asks what they think to be a dumb question and then the replies start rolling in and I get to learn something new to try. The pick of scroll saw blades is the biggest help you will have to gaining success with your new endeavor. Every saw moves the blade up and down and can turn out the satisfying items. but a best saw with the wrong blades can only turn out mediocre items.  ( My take on it ).

Come here often so all can get to know you better and you us.
