You will have to reach back very time to adjust the tension which is time consuming .This saw has no lubrication points for the connecting arms in the back of the saw . That's where they wear out first. If your going to be a weekend warrior scrolling you'll be ok !post-1607-0-59658700-1428063317_thumb.jpg

  • 1 year later...

I purchased a Porter Cable scroll saw and took it back the very next day. The motor would cut out when turning the variable speed control knob. It seemed like a nice saw, but for a tool to have this issue right out of the box and even after running for about 2 hours scrolling is a no go in my book.

I did look at the Wen model as I am just starting out scrolling, but the lack of local stores carrying the Wen saw and not being able to see it first hand led me to the PC. Now I am looking at jumping in with both feet and purchasing the newer Jet scroll saw. I would do the Dewalt, but they're made by the same company as Porter Cable.

Cheers,

Alex

I opted out of the Wen because of the bad reviews at a few places.  After having a couple of junk saws that I had to return I bought the Porter Cable.  So far, so good. (knock on wood)  It has a little bit of a vibration, but I think a mat under it will fix that.  There is also the issue with the plastic center plate sitting lower than the top of the saw table.  I fixed that with a couple of paper gaskets (made out of a file folder) but it still dips in the middle causing an occasional issue.  (wood jumping)  All in all I'm pretty pleased with it.  Now to get some decent blades....

Maybe I'll just go without beer for a couple months and save a few pennies for the porter cable at Lowes for $199.

I think you would be better off with the porter cable. I started with a craftsman with the tension lever at the back and it really is not a big deal to me. Got a new excalibur and of course the wife got it and I still use the craftsman. My opinion is if your finances can afford the porter cable get it otherwise you can survive and do well with a cheaper saw.

Jet is bottom feed only, so if you like feeding the blade up from the bottom of the workpiece, and there are many that do, Jet might be a good saw for you. With Dewalt/Ex, you can go either way.  Personally, I hate bending over and bottom feeding, so I wouldn't purchase a Jet if it were half it's current price.

As far as Dewalt being owned by Black and Decker, you should see the previous Jet scroll saw, whew, that could make you lose confidence in a company.
