Decided I wanted to cut something fun tonight and try out the spiral blades I picked up recently.  The pattern is from the pattern library here at the village and is by Sue Walker/Shadylady0447. I had a great time cutting it and by the end I was starting to feel half way comfortable with the spirals.  The blue background is just something I laid it on to make the detail stand out.

Great job!  What spirals did you use?  Flying Dutchman New Spiral 3/0 is my favorite.  But, do not make the mistake I made.  I used nothing but spirals for almost a year. Now I am wanting to try some different, to me. types of scrolling.  Like intricate fret work on boxes and a flat blade give a cleaner cut, you can get sharper points and squarer corners with a flat blade, but I am having a heck of a time getting use to flat blades again.  I say stay in practice with both.  I wish I had.

Excellent cutting.  I use mostly flat blades however I do use spirals from time to time.  For me at least it depends upon what I am cutting.  If it is lettering or something that needs a super crisp corner flat blades.  If it is veining or other accents like that then spirals.  I have used and continue to use spirals to cut 1 1/2 inch to 2 inch thick projects.  I agree that you need to use both and keep the skill set strong for both.  Thanks for sharing the Pirate with us.

I agree ,it's a tough transition changing from one to the other and when you forget what blade your using it's a disaster.

I had bought an assortment pack of Flying Dutchman and sadly it didn't come with the 3/0 as I have read a lot of people like them.  I used a #3 for most of this and a #5 for the larger areas in the hat.  Honestly this was only my second time using spirals, the first attempt is in a pile of decrotive firewood...lol.  While I find them fun to use I'm definately more comfortable with flat blades.  I do plan to keep trying to get better with the spirals though since they work great with the portrait style patterns.  I'm gonna have to order me some of those 3/0s though.

Thanks again everyone for the kind words!

Hey Josh

Good looking Pirate.  Spirals are just another tool for our tool box. ( My two cents) I can see in portraits that they would be a must.   However as said before in this post

don't depend on them exclusively.  A friend of mine learned with a spiral blade and now he can't even use a flat blade if he wanted to.  Need to use both.

Good job on Pirate.  Thanks for sharing.

Looks fantastic Josh, when Shadylady released this pattern she released three or four in the series. Will you be cutting any of them, do you even have a copy of the other patterns? There was this one, and one of a semi buried treasure chest with a skeleton guarding it and there was a pattern of a ghost ship. I don't remember if there was more in the series or not, but they are all good looking patterns.

I think they are all still in the patterns gallery, and yes I'd like to cut the other's as well.  They are all great looking patterns and should be fun to cut.
