daddy_tindell
Good morning everyone... Had a buddy ask if I could make some coasters for him..well I was going to cut in maple and back with walnut and then put cork feet on...would it be better to sandwich cork between the layers and just not waste my walnut as backer. Is the cork neccessary if I finish the coaster good?
Dan
I have made coasters with and without cork. I finished the wood with poly and have used them for almost 10 years with no trouble. I suggest making sure the grains are perpendicular to minimize cupping. The cork does help prevent the glass from sliding on the coaster. BTW, I love using maple and walnut together. It provides great contrast. Good choice. Scrolling Steve and amazingkevin

LarryEA
LOL, Quite unique. Look 'Super' to me. But that's not an answer to your question. The cork is to stop sliding of the coaster. Your problem is potential warping. A change in atmosphere, temperature and humidity, may cause wood to warp. 'cause these coasters are going to go thru changes, (hot coffee, cold tea...etc) Sandwich two pieces cross grain (like plywood) will in most cases stop any warp.
