merlin
Evening\morning people, a wee Q bout oak timber\lumber. I have been making a couple clocks lately out of oak (English Oak) I say English because before I got my mitts on it It was headboards for beds. Now the Q...Is there any oak in the USA that resembles my English oak in color. I have made a bit of a boo boo and need the make some repairs, (there's no cut a new piece cause it's been glued). Wood filler in this country don't stretch to oak so have to get it from USA... me thinks that Golden Oak might be a fairly good match. Will try attaching a photo of the first clock. ***Merlin*** ps: The attached photo is a large one so might take a couple minutes to load. LarryEA
Merlin, You present a tough one. Wood ages and changes. If you are looking for stains, I suggest you Click here: how to mix stain - AOL Search Results Mix your own. Still may have to order what you need from outside your area. If it's wood you are looking for, then you may never find a match. amazingkevin
ike
That is a beautiful clock and it does look like it may be golden oak . but will it be a perfect? match it's hard to say.
oldhudson
According to Wikipedia, white, Hungarian and Turkey oaks are native to Europe and Asia. White oak is native to the America’s as well. Red oak is found in the America’s. Canyon or bur or scrub oak in the SW US and Mexico. There is no listing for English oak, however at the website Wood Database, English oak is listed as one of several sub-groups of white oak. My guess, white oak. Lot’s of white oak in the right half of the US and Canada, but as Larry pointed out, with color differences of aging and the color differences between heart wood and sap wood – this sounds like a difficult task. Good luck.
Phantom Scroller
Looks like red oak to me.If I needed a match I would run a few bits through the scrollsaw then pick up the sawdust and mix it with wood glue perfect match. ike
if you can get any sawdust from the oak that you have mix it with modeling glue and that makes a good wood filler when it's dry it looks like the material.
LarryEA
The sawdust method is good but in my humble opinion, the glue will change the shade a bit. Best to test a couple methods first.
