koehler788 Posted May 7, 2015 Report Posted May 7, 2015 (edited) I was just looking through a bunch of patterns with overlays, and was thinking how hard it would be to "Cleanly" glue them to the base. I may be wrong, ( I can't recall seeing or hearing of this ), Why not attach a quality double sided tape to it before you cut and then several coats of your choice of sealer? Just thinking Edited May 7, 2015 by koehler788 Quote
LarryEA Posted May 8, 2015 Report Posted May 8, 2015 I'm not quite following but what I think I 'hear', that would work. Try it. Quote
Multifasited Posted May 8, 2015 Report Posted May 8, 2015 What are you calling over lay ? If it has any holes in it would be a problem ,I'm with Larry unsure EXACTLY what your asking! Quote
dgman Posted May 8, 2015 Report Posted May 8, 2015 The only way to know is to try it! Let us know how it works out. Quote
koehler788 Posted May 8, 2015 Author Report Posted May 8, 2015 OK. - I'm calling overlay a scrolled layer that is attached to a backer board or a Second layer. Steve Goode has several patterns that are this way. Now - before cutting anything, Attach some double sided adhesive to the back side of the piece to be cut. (before cutiing ) I would assume that the waxy release paper would act as a lubricant while cutting just like packing tape. After all the cutting and drilling is done, remove the release paper and apply it to the backer. No Messy Glue Squeeze Out Quote
Gordster Posted May 8, 2015 Report Posted May 8, 2015 I use gorilla glue to attach the over lay..I find when I spread it thin, there is not much squeeze out.and when it does it is very easy to remove with sharp knife. Also I find sometimes it acts as good as a filler...my thoughts Quote
Multifasited Posted May 8, 2015 Report Posted May 8, 2015 I have not found any double face tape that was easy to separate.May be I only buy the cheap stuff.Try it, I don't hold much hope ,too many issues from my experience with the stuff.JMHO Quote
woodduck Posted May 8, 2015 Report Posted May 8, 2015 I use a small foam 2" paint roller, Load it lightly with pva glue & apply to back of scrolled piece & it puts a thin coating on the wood & I find there is no squeeze out ,if i have a border outside the scrolled area I spread the glue a little thicker on that part.Works for me. Cheers Peter. Quote
LarryEA Posted May 8, 2015 Report Posted May 8, 2015 There's more than one way to skin a chicken. Try it !!!!!! Quote
jerry1939 Posted May 9, 2015 Report Posted May 9, 2015 I'm with "Woodduck," I spray paint the backer. Do the interior cuts, glue sparingly in critical areas. Spread with a foam brush. Apply a good bead of glue where I will cut the perimeter. As we all know, glue acts as a lubricant when you clamp 2 pieces together, and the pieces want to slide in relation to each other. If you saw the perimeter of the fretwork & backer as one piece, you are guaranteed a perfect cut. jerry Quote
Multifasited Posted May 9, 2015 Report Posted May 9, 2015 Sounds like a simple solution ,that wood work every time ! Quote
Lucky2 Posted May 9, 2015 Report Posted May 9, 2015 I would worry about it letting go, because the glue on the tape never hardens. It wouldn't take much pressure to break the joint, if your depending on the finish to help hold it all together. But like the rest, I say go ahead and try it, then you can report back to us with your findings. Len Quote
