Paul hd
Hi to everyone. I'm from Buckinghamshire in the UK and have just recently taken up this very addictive hobby of scroll sawing. I bought a secondhand Hegner. The first owner bought it back in 98, used it once and then it sat in its box until I brought it home about a month ago. Kind regards to all. Paul hd
You ladies and gents are great. The warmest welcome. The atmos on this forum really is one of the best. My scroll saw history only consists of five patterns that I have attempted. Here are two of them. I'm just loving this hobby. Cheers all Paul bobscroll
LarryEA
I'm impressed. Kitty and birds looks delicate. How did you do it, what type wood? The giraffe is also a nice one. You have done a job as good as anyone on both. Thank you for showing them.
Paul hd
Hi Larry. Thanks for your comments. I used 9mm ply. I think it was a number 5 blade and on the giraffe I started to use a spiral blade which was a number 4 Olson. Close up they are rough, but I'm happy with them. Btw. These patterns are from the Steve good site I've found that when I remove the masking tape/painters tape it pulls off small bits of the ply. Do you think that's because it is a cheap ply? Paul hd
Hi Bob. You are too kind. May I ask you srollers in the UK where you buy your timber from. ?
bobscroll
Hello Paul, Would you believe skips also second hand furniture being thrown out! pallet's, And if you have a band saw, You can re-saw thick pieces of timber down thinner as you like! You might have some people in a trading estate near you that throw out scrap pieces of wood, Just ask them if they have any wood? It's always best when it's free! lol Bob Paul hd
Paul hd
Good info Bob. I will now never be able to walk past a skip without having a peek. :-)) Cheers Paul bobscroll

savethebeer
I've found that when I remove the masking tape/painters tape it pulls off small bits of the ply. Do you think that's because it is a cheap ply? Hello Paul, only my second day as a member and here I am giving 'expert' advice. In Ireland we have the same problem you have in that 'good' wood is either very hard or very expensive to come across. I had the same problem as you with bits pulling off all the cheap stuff I use, but I have stopped that by peeling the tape carefully backwards, as opposed to pulling it upwards off the wood. Sand the wood before you put tape on can help also. Bob
Paul hd
Hi Bob. Top tips. Thanks. I've started to use a better quality ply and apart from cutting nicer it does not have so many tear outs happening. I will definitely use your tips to cut down the problem further. I might also go the route of attaching the pattern directly to the wood and then use a cellulose (I think that's what it is) to remove the pattern after cutting. I read about it on this forum recently. Regards Paul
savethebeer
Did try sticking the pattern directly to wood before, but found that if you cut 40 or 60 holes in your wood then you are left with lots of tiny tiny islands of pattern that needs to be peeled off. I prefer to use the masking tape. And as has been said here before, look in skips and charity shops. An old chest of drawers could yield up lots of panels of handy sized pieces of good wood. Paul, just one extra thing to bear in mind is what finish you intend to use. Your glue and then your cellulose might react with your french polish or your laquer and you'll end up with something that you did not plan on.
