vykus
I'm working on my first intarsia piece and I have read many different versions of how to stain white wood so that it does not yellow. I'm not sure if they are really different or just use different terminology. One book said to use white gel stain on white woods but from what I understand white gel stain actually has white tint in it, so why would I use that. other sources call for clear gel stain, which to me makes more sense but the only thing I could find at my local stores is "natural" gel stain. Which ones have you all used for white woods (i'm using holly) I don't want it to yellow and I don't want to screw it up. I have attached a picture of my progress so far, the eagles head still needs some shaping but it is coming along well. oneleggimp and MetalScroll

WayneMahler
Really looking good there. I would think something that has UV protection should help, clear of coarse. All wood ages and darkens to some extent including Holly ( very expensive ) Keep us posted on your choice and progress.
Lucky2
Vykus, waterbased varnish/varathane doesn't yellow, a lot of people use it just for that reason. If I were you, I'd try some on a small piece of holly just to see if it will work for you. If it works fine, you could use it to finish the whole project.
