GrampaJim
I have had a Dewalt 788 type 1, for about a year. Bought it used obviously. Fixed some knocking issues, but other than that have had no problems. Using it 2+ hours a day. I have a line on a Excalibur 30" for $500 used. Its a 100 miles away. I can't imagine what I need a 30" saw for - seems way too big. Also, I am a cheapskate, but this is half the price of a new unit, and I hear great things about Ex's. If I did this I would sell my 788 for about $200. What are your thoughts? Jim Edited August 26, 2015 by GrampaJim
vykus
Jim. I'm right up here in west bend and would love to take the 788 off your hands.would you take an instalment plan?
Southern Scroller
Depends on the condition of the Excalibur. It might be a great deal or a disaster. How much use has it had? As far as selling your 788, I also have a type 1 and it will cost someone more than $200 to get it from me even if it's in the corner watching me use a new Excalibur. Lucky2
Personally, I think it's a great chance for you to upgrade. I own an EX21, and it works perfectly and has been for years. EX,s are an exceptional saw, and they are very nice to use and own. I've used Dewalts in the past, and they are nice working saws, but, the EX's are nicer working. But, that's only my opinion and the opinions of a few woodworking magazines that do tool reviews. Len Clayton717

oldhudson
IF it's in good shape I'd go for it, but then it's not my money.
Phantom Scroller
Believe me Jim I have the EX 21 and sometimes wish I had the 30 and have to use the dreaded spiral blade because it's to big,so yes given the chance for that price I'd snap up the 30. NC Scroller
To me the obvious question is why not keep both? Unless you are real tight for $$$ or space there is nothing wrong with two saws. Lucky2
GrampaJim
I have decided to pass on this one. I have my heart set on a Hawk (I guy can dream, can't he ). Matt in West Bend, if I ever do replace the 788, I will let you know. Anyone interested it is listed on Craigs List in Green Bay. http://greenbay.craigslist.org/tls/5172508373.html Price is now $430. WayneMahler
I was looking at an older ex on craigslist. Wrote Seyco about and 2 days later got a response.. It was an honest opinion too, basically said no parts available for that model anymore. So I walked away from it. May be worth the time to write and ask a few questions, be patient for the reply though. I understand he is very busy. NC Scroller
hotshot
This is a current model without the dust collection and black paint. Some folks hate the little holes for dust collection so would actually prefer this model over the table with the holes. It's currently listed at $430, and looks to be in a Pawn shop of some sort. They might come down further. ---------Randy Edited September 8, 2015 by hotshot
Scrappile
If in good shape, buy it for sure. Try it and I think it will become you primary saw and your DeWalt will be stored as a back up,
spoth28
Check it out, see if you like it, bring a piece of wood to test, and if you love it more power to ya, and if you don't you just saved 500 bucks on a product you wouldn't have wanted anyway. That's what I did with my Dewalt 20" and I love it.
