oldhudson Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 Not wanting to steal the 'retirement thread' elsewhere in the forum I'm posting here. I've been in forced retirement for 5 years and without a doubt the best part is not having the daily commute. Mine was about 32 miles each way. Right through the heart of the Twin Cities. It was easily an hour each way and in the winter...one time it took 3 hours to drive home! I can't say I enjoy volunteer work, but I do it one day a week. It's payback for all my blessings. amazingkevin, Scrolling Steve and LarryEA 3 Quote
LarryEA Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 Yes, retirement has its good and bad points. I miss interacting with others, not many people visit. Don't miss the drive either. Quote
GrampaJim Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 (edited) Mine is coming up at the end of the year. Looking forward to the change. I used to live in the twin cities a long time ago, so I can appreciate the commute you had. Edited August 27, 2015 by GrampaJim Quote
Scrolling Steve Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 I have been retired for four years now , and Life Is Good!!!.....Once i took up the scroll saw all my extra time went away! ! Quote
RangerJay Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 One of the neatest moments every day is waking up knowing I don't have to get up early ...... but what gets really weird is - I still get up early ...... every day ..... cause I want to ...... go figure ....... Southern Scroller Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 Retirement is fantastic. I volunteer with the Road to Recovery program of the American Cancer Society as needed. Total freedom to drive or not. It's good. My better half retires in about 9 months and we're getting out of town for a while. Perhaps becoming Sun Birds. That's the reverse of snowbirds. Sunbirds escape the intense summer heat and humidity of Florida for cooler climes. Canada here I come in July and August! Quote
amazingkevin Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 There's one good or bad thing about old age,it doesn't last long.I was forced to retire from disabilty's recently and live on $750 a month. The best thing i like about it is my income now puts a roof over my head, and thats about it.Gas and food are luxury's for me .Will scroll for food! jerry1939 Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 My Wonderful Sweetheart and I are married 53 years. I tell people that scrolling is good for the marriage. The husband is in the garage making noise and sawdust. The Wife has peace and quiet to read a book and enjoy her coffee !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jerry Quote
Kepy Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 Retirement is fine except I am now a full time caregiver for my mother and that doesn't leave a lot of time. She likes to sleep late so I can sometimes get in some shop time early in the morning. I haven't used an alarm clock for several years and that is a blessing. Quote
wombatie Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 My husband can retire any time he wants to now but he can't make up his mind if he wants to or not. But when he does we will find ourselves a nice routine and go with the flow. Marg Quote
don in brooklin on Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 Retirement has been the best part of my life. I did the freedom 55 route. Big party etc and then 4 month later I was asked to do some consulting. I did on and off for 10 years. It is a big difference to work because you want to versus you have too. You also get paid for what you know too. At 65, when asked to consult some more I told the customer that I was now a member of the "2" generation - too old, too grumpy, but more than ever too busy. I don't have time for everthing on the to do list but who cares as I do what I want when I want. I used to drive for Cancer but I didn't like being tied to a schedule so now I like to use my woodworking skills for charitable projects. Being a member of the Durham Woodworkers give me lots of friendship and chances to volunteer if I want. Enjoy life. Don Quote
Gordster Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 I love retirement...I did take on a few part time jobs, not just for something to do but for the dollars. Steve Good has a word art saying...Retirement,every day is like Saturday. One more thing,I too get up each morning around 6;30 ,I would get up earlier except she would brain me lol. GrampaJim 1 Quote
ike Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 I went into full time requirement a little over a year ago May. Get up early and go to the shop for 3 or 4 hours, come in and help my wife with her house work 9 she can't get around much any more.I worked 10 years part time in the machine shop. Did enjoy it. But there isn't much of a opportunity for a old School machinist any more. But I do enjoy my retirement but miss the interactions with the fellows that I worked with. Quote
