rdatelle
Hi everyone. I think I blew a fuse on my DeWalt 788 and can't to figure out how to get that black plastic cover off to check the fuse. It says to push down but that's not working. Help Please/
dgman
Hey Ralph, on top of the black fuse box is a small slot. You need a very small flat blade screw driver. Fit into that small slot and push down. The fuse holder will pop right out. LarryEA
rdatelle
Thanks DGMAN, I tried that. Maybe I didn't do it hard enough. I'll go try again. Hope it works. Thanks again,
rdatelle
That worked. Now to try and find a fuse for it. LOL. oneleggimp

dgman
So Ralph, if changing the fuse doesn't solve the problem, it is probably the switch. If that's the case, I'll talk you through cleaning it.
rdatelle
Fuse was bad. I ordered some from Amazone. I saw what I was doing wrong. I was putting the screwdriver in the front slot. Edited August 29, 2015 by rdatelle
LarryEA
Local hardware or auto probably has them.
NC Scroller
Ralph, hate to tell you this but blown fuses are often a sign of a motor gone bad. I know this for a fact. You should be able to get a fuse of that size in many auto parts stores. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

rdatelle
NC, I don't think it's the motor. I was cutting inch oak and I was pushing a little fast and the fuse blew. It did what it was supposed to do.
dgman
Nice pics and in 1st photo is a almost extint tool a screwdriver that is made in usa ! Yup, it's a Craftman screw driver from Sears. Actually, every new DeWalt saw comes with a tool to open the fuse box. It's in the box, but the manual doesn't say what it's used for, and most folks toss in the trash, or if they save it, don't remember where they put it. DAHIKT. Southern Scroller
There's a fuse? Guess I've been lucky. Thanks for the info. Not sure when I bought mine but got it from Tool Crib of the North just before they switched to Amazon.
rdatelle
dgman, I changed the fuse but it doesn't work. Not sure what the problem is now.
dgman
dgman, I changed the fuse but it doesn't work. Not sure what the problem is now. It's probably the switch. If you have a compressor try blowing air into the switch while rocking the switch off and on. If that doesn't do it, you will need to remove the switch. If you can do that, I'll walk you through taking the switch apart to clean it.A lot of folks tape the switch in the on position and use a foot switch. Personally, I don't like using a foot switch so I deal with cleaning the switch when needed.
rdatelle
dgman, I took the cover off where the switch is and I didn't see any dust in there. Should I disconnect the wires that are there and then try to clean it better.
dgman
If you are still blowing fuses, it's probably not the switch.
rdatelle
Just checked the new fuse I put in and it's not blown so something else is going on.
dgman
Ok Ralph, try this. First unplug the saw. Open up the cover that houses the controls. Unplug the connectors on the switch. Using electrical tape, tape the two connectors together making sure the are touching each other. Plug the saw in. If it runs, the problem is with the switch. If not, it's time to take it in. On Monday I will write a tutorial on how to take the switch apart and clean it.
rdatelle
dgman, It's not blowing fuses. I took the switch apart and blew it out. Still not working. Plugged it into different outlets with no luck. Hope it's not the motor. I'll have to take it in to the DeWalt repair center Tuesday and see what's going on. I might just upgrade to an excalibur 21 inch. The lowest price I've seen so far was $899.00 with stand and foot pedal and free shipping. Scrappile
I don not know about these things, but I would think there is some test you could do to determine if it is the motor. You take it to a DeWalt repair will cost you whether they fix it or not. But, believe me upgrading to an Excalibur is not a bad thing. You would/will love it. NC Scroller
Sorry to hear the bad news. There is one thing to check which are the brushes.
