spoth28
Does anyone have a good idea of where to sell portraits? I've tried etsy, craft shows, even curriculum fairs, but to no avail.
Clayton717
I sell most of mine by word of mouth. someone seeing them and telling a friend. We have an Art show(Black Swamp Arts Festival) than has all types of works / art. painting, sculptures, turnings and scroll work. I personally don't do the shows but have a couple friends that that do. One does nothing but scroll saw portraits and does very well. My advise would be to make some up and give a couple to family/friends and hopefully they will show them around and drum you up some business. If you don't sell many don't get discouraged keep trying. If nothing else they will make great gifts. Are you pricing them to high?? Or is the subject just not of interest to many? amazingkevin
Ya gotta beat the bushes, My friend with a sub shop has flyers delivered just before lunch and brings in new customers daily. The more people that see your work the greater the odds are that you'll bring home the bacon .Leave flyers in grocery store bulletin boards, laundry mat, door to door on door knobs .Make sure gifts is on the list on the flyers as Christmas is right around the corner.Everything is a percentage.Out of 100mflyer you'll get so many orders ,out of 1000 expect more. You'll get the hang of it. Nothing ventured nothing gained, advertisement is everything.Good luck.A race horse knows that the hard he works the more he wins! Lucky2
Josh, what type of portraits are you thinking of selling? Is it portraits of actors and famous people, or, is it of a personal portrait of someone's family member. If it is a portrait of an actor or a famous person, then it's a matter of waiting until the right person walks by. If it's of someone else's family, then those are usually special orders. And to get those special orders, you have to get your name and work known by others. To start try cutting one for a friend or family member who is celebrating a birthday or anniversary, of course this one is done for free. Hopefully, they'll show it to a lot of people who might be interested in buying one from you, that is how I started selling the ones I made. Now, I have people calling me, asking to have a cutting done for them. Don't think that just because you like something that other will, ask around and find out what is popular in your area, or, what other people might want t see cut out. But really, it's all a matter of getting your name and work out there. Len

Lucky2
Josh, I meant to ask, what type of portraits are you trying to sell? In my area, wildlife portraits are the best sellers. Anything with a moose, deer or mostly any other type of local wildlife or jumping fish cuttings sell well. But, that is in my area, you must know what is popular in the area. Figure out what people like in your area, fishing, hunting bike riding, or whatever they do, let that be your target market for now. If your work is good enough, and if people like it, they will call you. Len
WayneMahler
Josh I agree with what the others said. I know from personal experience that it takes a while to get your name out there and be recognized for you work and craftsmanship. I don't do a lot of portraits, But the ones I do require special customers. The wildlife ones go pretty well here in PA. Be patient and consistent and things will work out in time.
