smitty0312
I have to paint some names on a Christmas project........so I am going to try to make it simple and cut my own set of letters to paint through......using some 1/8" bead board........anybody else have a better idea? Since they are wood, I can re-use them.......shouldn't take long to cut out.......hopefully I will get better results when it comes to painting......give me some feedback.....thanks oneleggimp, Scrolling Steve and Smudger

oldhudson
I'd certainly make a couple and do a test run before committing to the alphabet. Whenever I try a stencil painting technique the paint creeps under and the image isn't sharp. For my Candy Plinko game posted here: http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/topic/15780-candy-plinko-games/ I found a font I liked at Dafonts and printed out what I needed on the computer and used carbon paper (you gotta be an old timer to know carbon paper) and traced an out-line of the characters. I then went over the out-line with a fine tip Sharpie and finally used acrylic paint to fill the characters.
Phantom Scroller
Good idea Dan the only thing I can think of is a thin plastic sheet of some sort to be able to clean it easily. I'm sure you'll come up with the right way keep us informed how it goes. Roly Lucky2 and smitty0312
WayneMahler
I have tried many ways and they all left less then sharp edges when painted. Then best way I found was use carbon paper, trace onto the wood, carefully cut the lines with an exacto knife then hand paint with acrylics. If you rush the letters and paint past the cut line, you have a heck of a time cleaning it up. Interested in seeing what this works out to. Lucky2
Dan, I think it would be easier and quicker to cut out the names you want, rather than to try to work with all of the separate letters. I would think it would be a nightmare to get all of the letters to line up properly. What size of letters are you considering making? To small, and they would be very aggravating to work with. To large, then they don't look right or won't fit the piece your working on. Personally, I think you would be better suited to just cut out the names as needed. Sure, keep a copy of each name you cut, in stencil form for future work. Len
amazingkevin
I agree ,that way if you make one piece names they get to keep the name too!Two presents in one! ;) ;) ;)

Shannon Banks
Hobby Lobby sells DIY stencil packs, You print out onto the stencil paper, then you use either an exacto or burner to cut the stencil out. Then use a stencil adhesive to make it stay in place. Best paint to use for stencils is chalk paint. It's a LOT thicker than acrylic paint and doesn't bleed as much. This is the stencil adhesive I use http://www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-%26-Hobbies/Stencils-%26-Craft-Paints/Stenciling/Repositionable-Stencil-Adhesive/p/29923 These are the stencil blanks I use as well - http://www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-%26-Hobbies/Stencils-%26-Craft-Paints/Stenciling/8%22-x-10%22-Stencil-Blank-Value-Pack/p/27040 Hope that helps! smitty0312

Shannon Banks
Update..........cut a letter out and tried spray painting.........not happy with the look......... Have you tried the stencil blanks I suggested? It's much easier to stencil with a flat surface than a raised surface such as wood. smitty0312

rdatelle
I'd be worried about painting with stencils since you would have to worry about bleeding through. Good luck with it Dan.
