new computer

Hi Gray,

Congratulations on the new computer. I certainly could use a new one. Anyway, there are a lot of different graphics programs that would work. I use Adobe Photoshop mostly. Unfortunately, its a very expensive program and has a steep learning curve. I know a lot of people like Corel Draw, but that is a bit expensive as well. There are a lot of freeware out there too. They might not be as powerful as these professional software, but they are pretty impressive for free software! I like Inkscape(vector based) and Gimp(pixel based). I've also heard of good things about Paint.Net(pixel based). They're all free. You should be able to find some tutorials on YouTube and Google. It'll take a little practice, but I think you'll do fine.

Good luck and enjoy your new computer!

Hi Gray,

I'm fairly new to making patterns but have been a user of Photoshop for years. Take a look at Photoshop LE which you can get for about $100, maybe less if you do some looking. It does everything you need it to and is geared to the "home" user. I've also downloaded Inkscape and have found it great in converting a pixel based pattern into a vector based based which is much cleaner and user friendly for rescaling and you can also find some free royalty free clip art to use in it or do your own designs.

Sorry Gray I just realized it's called Photoshop Elements now, not LE anymore

I use Paint Shop Pro X2 and Inkscape. But Gimp is supposed to be excellent to make patterns with............I haven't tried it yet. If I can figure it out I'm going to try to do a tutorial on it eventually.

Also I've been told Kodak Easyshare is another good one for making patterns............and it's free. But, although I've downloaded it, I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. Picassa is supposed to be good too.............I think that's by google, not sure though.
