Commissioned Cottage Sign

Well done DW !....What is the process when using the spar varnish ?...Do you seal it before the painting or after?...or both?...Just for future reference.

I sealed it after painting.  I used 8 light coats so that I was sure to get all the crevices and open spots covered.  I used both spray and brush for it.  I carefully brushed the Spar Varnish along the edges of the lettering and then began the process of lightly coating the sign several ( 8 in total ) times to ensure that it was weather resistant to the best  I could make it.  I have been playing around with the thought of using casting resin but that will be for another time I think :)

I was commissioned to make a Cottage sign for a Snowbird Couple ( Winter in the south and Summer in the North ).  Cut from pine and then sealed and weatherproofed with spar varnish.

I couldn't tell if the printing was hand lettered on the white or if it's done like Jim Finn's work,i can't think of the word to describe his technique or if everything is cut out ,painted and reinserted and then finished off.But no two ways about it ,It's a "TOP JOB! It's going to be well received! Hah now i remember the word i was looking for,INLAY. :)  :D  ;)       ;)  :D

Nice job, DW,

I have used spar varnish for most of the out-door items I sell but, always worry about how quickly it will amber

and how dark the discoloration is going to be.

That would be a real concern with the white sign like you made.

So far though, no one has ever come back to me with any concerns about their signs or out-door decorations.

Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Spirithorse

Actually it is UV stabilized so it will take years to darken appreciably.
