NC Scroller
I agree with Kevin. It is all about the motor tag. OCtoolguy
ike
I was talking to the son of the son in law of the person I bought it of and he said it is at least 10 to 12 years old. OCtoolguy
Fish
If it is that old I'd say you have a good chance it's a type one, supposed to be the better one also. OCtoolguy
NC Scroller
I bought my brand new Type 2 late in 2002. Though I can't find it now I seem to recall Type 1's were last made in 2000. OCtoolguy
ike
The only difference I can see is that the top blade lock hs a little different look has like a guide to put the blade in with. OCtoolguy
dgman
Tho only difference is the blade clamps look just a little different, but function just the same. The over all difference is the type I was made in Canada and the type II is made in Tiwan. If you have a type I, it is over fifteen years old. WayneMahler
I think a lot of people have been following the type I and Type II. The way I understand it, the type I are the better of the two. But the type II have made progress over the past few years, No matter which one you got, best of luck and many happy hours scrolling OCtoolguy
jerry1939
IF you buy a new 788, it is probably built in Taiwan. They are notorious for skimping on grease in the bearings. Watch this 52 minute video. Also, I just bought a new Taiwan Delta, when I took it apart, I FOUND OUT IT IS THE SAME AS A DEWALT 788 !!! http://www.ereplacementparts.com/dewalt-dw788-type-scroll-saw-parts-c-1009_2631_207564.html http://www.deltamachinery.com/downloads/manuals/scroll_saws/40-694/40-694%20Scroll%20Saw%20Parts%20List%20Rev%203.pdf The Delta appears to have come off of the assembly line. Different housing shape, but identical working parts. The Delta is $100+ less expensive. jerry Edited October 13, 2015 by jerry1939 OCtoolguy
Raffy
Dewalt Type 2 vs Type 1 scrollsaw DW788. The main difference is how the motor was made and designed. Type 2 or Type 1 refers to the motor type rather than the scrollsaw itself. Type 2 uses permanent magnets as stator as oppose to Type 1 which uses coils as stator in its motor. Power Off the scrollsaw. Just put any ferrous metal (eg steel) on the motor case, if it got magnetised/attracted, the motor is Type 2. Due to permanent magnet inside the motor casing. Type 2 motors are made in Taiwan. Type 1 motors are made in Canada. OCtoolguy
