cdawson41
I'm not sure that bragging rights is where this posting belongs, however, I have come a long way since my last post. I had started out using spiral blades only and that worked out great for me, if nothing else to get me comfortable with the machine, cutting, speeds etc. Now I can alternate between spiral blades and straight blades depending on what I'm working on. These three ornaments are nothing to brag about other than I was able to glue boards together, then cut into a square block and come up with something that was close to the pattern of a 3D Christmas Tree ornament. Once by back surgery is over, I'm going to hit this hard and heavy til they are perfect, I adore these things. I did manage to get a set of ABC's cut out, sanded down and painted for my 2 yr old grandbaby, so that is pretty cool also.

Vector01
Those are great. Like anything else you get better with practice. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Get the "feel" of how the blades cut on different types of wood. Just go with the flow
cdawson41
Thank you both for your nice comments. I did find that the wood certainly makes a difference, the last one was a combination of pine and something like oak, but thats not right, I can't remember for sure. Too many meds right now lol. But it was definitely more difficult to cut through. I'm going to make my next one out of solid pine as I think the softer wood will make it much easier and get the hang of it. Hubby and I are working hard and turning one side of our garage (2 car garage) into a woodworking shop. He has done a lot of it and is very good at it. So to our advantage the Blockbuster here in town is going out of business so we purchased their huge L shaped counter that held their cash registers etc. We are going to put that in the garage and it will make a wonderful, huge work area for all of our projects...........so I'm really excited about that. rja
Ain't it amazing when you finish cutting your 3D project, peel away the waste, and find your prize inside? Nice job on the ornaments. I started scrolling because of an arthritis of the spine diagnosis a little over a year ago after having done blacksmithing for over 30 years. I am having a blast like you appear to be doing. Keep up the good work.
cdawson41
Rja That absolutely amazes me, to pull the block away and see the ornament there. The funny part is I can't really wrap my mind around how that works out like that. I love it! The back surgery I'm having is due to an automobile accident. I manage several stores and was on my way to one when I got Tboned and ruptured some disks in my back. Now I'm thinking I don't want to go back to work I've been home so long and really enjoying my scroll saw, though i go out and work for about 10 mintues at a time, can't wait til I can sit there all I want to. shadylady0447
Nice job on the ornaments, Cynthia! I remember my first compound cut ornament....it didn't stay together on one side....table wasn't square! But I kept it anyway and its fun to compare it to my later cuttings. And what a great find on the L shaped counter! Good luck with the back surgery.
