Vector01 Posted November 6, 2015 Report Posted November 6, 2015 Well...First shot with the Porter Cable 18" SS. It's starting to come back. Wanted a brush holder for my sumi-e brushes. Got some pine shelving from a neighbor and went at it. Caught myself repeating the old bad habits, pushing too hard against the blade, and the old sideways shove on turns. Off course I snapped a few blades over tightening...LOL! A little finish sanding, some stain and it's done. For those of you asking what is sumi-e, pronounced (sumay aye), It's Japanese brush painting. Lucky2, lawson56 and tomsteve 3 Quote

Working up to doing portraits again...The last one I did with my Dewalt... heppnerguy 1 Quote
heppnerguy Posted November 7, 2015 Report Posted November 7, 2015 We had a Japanese teacher stay with us for a few weeks, one summer. He had brought a group of school girls with him and they were housed in our community. at the end of the stay, the kids put on a little show for those who housed them and one thing they did was to paint with the brushes, I think you are talking about and each got their name in Japanese done with the brush.. An interesting time was had by all. Makes me wonder if you too are Japanese or how it is that you got interested in this art. Dick heppnerguy amazingkevin 1 Quote
Vector01 Posted November 7, 2015 Author Report Posted November 7, 2015 Nope, I am a Canadian, born in the US. Liked to draw and paint so this seemed an interesting art form. Very relaxing and I paint whatever comes to mind. Sometimes I will just make random brush strokes to see what I get (like the mountain) or add more detail (bird). The emphasis (as I understand it) is balance and simplicity. Traditionally only black and shades of gray are used. I add color as I feel the mood. amazingkevin 1 Quote
