newfie
What kind of finish to use on bowls and other items or that sort? Edited December 16, 2015 by newfie
Travis
I'd use mineral oil. You can also go to the hardware store and buy butcher block oil or salad bowl oil. I recently made some cutting boards and used something called butcher block conditioner, which has mineral oil and wax. Worked pretty well. amazingkevin and Phantom Scroller
scrollerpete
If your bowl will be used for food, used mineral oil and beeswax, buff between coats(at least3 coats). On the outside of the bowls I used shellac 2 to 4 coats. amazingkevin

Lucky2
Newf, it depends on what the bowl is going to be used for. If it is a bowl that will be used on a regular basis, and used for food purposes then I agree mineral oil is the way to go. But, if the bowl is going to be used for decorating or display purposes, then a different type of finish can be used. Personally, I like to treat my bowls with a coating or two of BLO, then a couple of finish coats of Lacquer. I don't turn large bowl yet, and the ones that I do turn are mostly used as candy dishes or display purposes. With finishing this way, I've never had any issues. Terry Jay
Try Walnut oil instead of mineral oil. Woodcraft carries Mahoney's walnut oil and Docotr's Woodshop. Walnut oil is food safe and dries, and will accept any of the finishes. http://doctorswoodshop.com/
