I am semi retired and a newbie to scrolling. I have enjoyed woodworking most of my life.  I thought I might try scrolling so I could take it with me when I go south for the winter. I am anxious to learn from all of you. Dave

Happy to have you ,Welcome aboard!Click on the page #'s at the bottom of each page for more posts at an earlier time all the way back to 2009!

As you can see by my first post I am not very computer savvy.  I could not see how to attach my picture to my profile so I attached it to my post.

I have purchased a Porter Cable.  It is a pretty nice saw for the money but I can tell already that if I get serious it won't be long before I upgrade. One of my first projects was to make a new plate that goes around the blade.  It is sad that the manufacturer doesn't even supply one that is the right thickness.  I realize you get what you pay for though.

I have done a couple of small projects so far.  I ordered an assortment of blades today to try to figure out what blade works well for different types and thicknesses of wood.

Do any of you make money with your scroll work or is that not possible? It would be nice to think that if I would get good at this that it would be a hobby that would not cost me a bunch of money.

In General Scroll sawing there is a post "Results of Blade usage'

This may be the link to it.... some info on blades

As to $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$   making.......

Most of my profit comes from the total enjoyment of showing and giving.

Though, I did make enough this year to buy a bench sander and saw blades.

I would guess, most here profit little and some do well.

Yes I make some money selling scroll saw made products.  Most scrollers do fretwork, I do not.  I have seen some  fretwork offered for sale here but seldom see it sold.  I sell mostly boxes with images inlaid into the hinged lid.  I use my scroll saw to do double bevel inlay.  These boxes sell well.  I sell about 300 each year for six years now.  Other ways to use a scroll saw include, intarsia, segmentation, bowl making, toy making, puzzles, compound cutting etc.

Dave,

Welcome to The Village. We are a group of really friendly people that love what we do and like to help each other and share or projects. There are a number of people here that love doing craft shows as a way to pick up some pocket change. Jim Finn has discovered an item that works really well to create a steady sale base for him. Often the first couple of craft shows appear to be learning experiences and often do not make very much money for the person but after a couple of shots, things often take off, of course there are examples of the opposite results on both the beginning and later on. I do not participate in craft shows, personally because I feel it will put pressure on me to try and have enough items ready for sale and turn what i enjoy into 'work', and I do not wish for that to happen. Others get and Etsy page and sell that way. Others might us Craigslist or Ebay, or like myself, Facebook. All work, sometime better than others. My favorite is making things for my and my love ones, pleasure. I also enjoy donating pieces for Charity fund raisers. For me, I find that I am able to generate more money than I have set as a monthly goal and it pays for all my supplies of wood, blades, sand paper, glue etc, while keeping the pressures off myself so that i may continue to do this craft and have fun in the process,

I also see that you are already posting so that says to me, that you will feel right at home very quickly because you will learn a little bit about who we are as individuals and we have the honor of getting to know you too, better in the process,

Dick
