I had bought something similar many years ago in Germany, flung it on the scanner and went to town. The original had been painted only and the letters were only painted on, too.  

I used poplar, read oak, and zebrawood.  No paint necessary just some mineral oil.

Well done!  Nice idea.  They aren't glued?  I see the copper wire, is that all that is holding them together, or are they glued as well?
