wombatie Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Have any of you used Balsa wood for scrolling? Mainly the thinner stock. What did you think? Would you use it again. Marg Quote
DWSUDEKUM Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Marg, it is VERY soft and not very dense. It cuts easily sands easily takes a finish ok but it can dent easily as well. If you are planning something intricate then you might wish to go from Balsa to Basswood. It quite a bit stronger than Balsa. DW Scrolling Steve 1 Quote
woodduck Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Often looked at it Marg & wondered the same thing but have not tried it,thinking it might be a bit too soft. Quote
wombatie Posted January 18, 2016 Author Report Posted January 18, 2016 I was wondering if it would be any good for the jewelry that we make. Marg Quote
ike Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 It makes good model air plains but other than that I don't think so. Quote
redwine Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 This is a very soft wood and as already stated will dent very easily. I don't thank I would recommend using it for jewelry for that reason. It's a bland color that might be used for intarsia but I believe you would be better off using basswood. Just my opinion! LarryEA Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 I searched and there is jewelry made with balsa. It is strong.... let us know if you use it.. Quote
WayneMahler Posted January 19, 2016 Report Posted January 19, 2016 Never thought about using balsa wood. Made lots of planes from it and other things. Light weight but very weak. I have used basswood with great results for compound cutting and intarsia. Quote

Marg Marge my first scroll saw was a dremil 12" or 14" and he used it for airplane model building with balsa woods Quote
