My second project.

I don't know how I got the title  "Pro Scroller".  If anyone knows how I can change that please tell me.  It is far from the truth.

I would like to thank Paul for the pattern and Doug for the suggestion of putting the name on it.

This is the second project I have made on my scroll saw.  I can see I need a lot of practice, improvement and help.  I made it out of 5/8 Cherry and finished it natural.  I started out using a #5 Flying Dutchman Spiral blade.  I think it looks OK where I used it but when I tried to go straight I had no luck at all so I switched to a #5 regular. I struggled with it also. I am not satisfied at all how my lettering and bow came out.  It seemed like I could not cut straight at all.  Is it the cherry wood, lack of experience, inexpensive saw or all of the above?

Thanks for the suggestions. dave

As a beginner, your second piece came out nice!

If you are having trouble going straight or staying on the line, you probably need more tension on your blade.

You want to hear a high "ping" when you pluck the blade.

This project is best using flat blades. I suggest you learn to use flat blades first. Once you have mastered flat blades, then go on to learn spirals. By the time you have mastered spirals, you will know where spirals are appropriate.

Hi Dave.. I know I'm just a newbie here but my 2 cents for what it's worth..

1) Don't be so hard on yourself. Your piece came out great. Remember, we scroll to have fun. If you enjoyed doing it, fantastic !! No one knows if you followed the pattern to the 'T' anyway. There are no mistakes... :). It's healthy though to be critical of our own work. That's what drives us to be better.

2) I also found that spirals are harder to work with while trying to keep a straight line. When I do use them, I make sure I go a bit slower for more control. So don't think it's you. I've read that many others have a problem with spirals.

3) The only way we all get experience is by "playing" more and more. I bet that once you get more projects under your belt and then try this again, you will be pleasantly surprised !

Keep up the good work. We're anxious to see more.

Btw - What saw are you using ?

Dave you really did do an excellent job.  Some of us have done worse that that on our 5 and 6 projects.  Don't be so hard on yourself.  Listen to Dan (dgman) he knows what he is talking about he teaches scroll sawing so he is not leading you astray.  ;)

Thank you for all your comments.  I have become obsessed in a very short time with scrolling and using Inkscape. In my past I had a large shop where I built furniture and cabinets. It was a totally different type of work.   Not much was actually done by hand. I probably am expecting too much to fast from myself.

I have a Porter Cable Scroll saw. I have never been around any other Scroll Saw to see the difference. I'm sure they are like any other piece of equipment.....the more it cost the better it is.

Again.....Thank you for the feed back, dave

Dave, that came out WAY better than my second (or twenty-second) project.  Like everyone has said, practice and have fun!  Lettering is the hardest thing for most people, so don't be too hard on yourself - you did great.  One thing that helped me overall was to find a pattern that I loved and make a bunch of them - I don't mean stack cutting, just cut it few times.  It helps to keep you focused on the cut you are doing and not be thinking about figuring out how to cut it. (if that makes sense)
