Hello

I am new to this forum and to scroll sawing, since retiring i've been looking for a new hobby and invested a little money in buying a Proxxon DSH Scrollsaw. I have upgraded it by smoothing and polishing the table and buying a selection of Swiss saw blades. I have been bought a few good pattern books for Christmas and i am now looking forward to getting proficient in its use.

I have done general woodwork all of my life and remember my dad making lots of items on his treadle fret saw and still have some of his patterns from the 1930s.

I holiday a lot is the USA where there is a lot of woodcraft done, pity is not the same over here in the UK unless you know better and if do please share!

Looking forward to many hours of scrolling!

Gordon,

I think you will find that scrolling is a very rewarding hobby. I also started scrolling after I retired and I have grown to really love it. My only suggestion would be to start with rather simple patterns until you become comfortable with your saw. then venture out into more challenging pieces. After all, no one can be a great artist the first time they pick up a paint brush, no matter how hard they try. Scrolling is a learning experience as  well so take it easy on yourself. Remember to always have fun at it and be open to asking for any help on anything that may come up that might puzzle you some. Everyone here loves to help others and see what other are making too.

Hi Gordon, welcome to SSV and hope you enjoy it.

Like you, I have retired and although my hobby was photography at that time, woodworking took over a couple of years ago and I soon got interested in bandsaw box making, which has gone well.  Now I am interested in trying more scrollsaw working to make Intarsia, but the scrollsaw I have is an old Record model that we inherited with a load of other tools and I want a new Excalibur EX16 for my birthday in a couple of weeks time when I'm 75.

It all looks interesting and another challenge to keep me busy.  This SSW looked good and it certainly has a lot of very good scrollers as well as the UKworkshop to which I have been contributing for a while.

Good luck and keep in touch. Us Old-Uns need support!
