ricklab
I have completed a couple of trivets and now I am looking for ideas on how to finish them. I have not worked with any oils. So 1. what do you use, 2 how do you apply it. Thanks
JohnR48
I prefer Watco Danish Oil. For trivets I put some oil in a shallow pan and dip the trivet to coat the entire item. Set it on a paper towel for about 15 minutes then wipe off all the excess. 2 coats would be sufficient as they aare not exposed to moisture. If they get scratched just wipe on a little oil to repair. NC Scroller
I have used Poly on mine with no issues. I mix semi-gloss gloss poly 50/50 with mineral spirits and dip it like JohnR48 describes about. Wipe off the excess and air dry.
Scrolling Steve
Rick, I have cut and finished a few Trivets and the thing that works for me is mineral oil ! When I give a trivet to someone i include a note telling them they can rejuvenate them every so often by simply wiping them down with mineral oil ! Kepy
I have been doing trivet for years and finish by dipping in mineral oil, then remove and let drip dry (I place them on something that will let them drip). After they dry (couple of days), I buff them with a brown paper bag to get a little sheen. Have one on my table that has been used for over 10 yrs without a problem. It has been my experience that really nice ones usually wind up on the wall rather than the table even though I tell them that they are to be used. ricklab
Thanks for the very useful information everyone. Just checked on line with Lowes, they have Jasco fast drying and slow drying. It says it is milky and somewhat thicker than " normal " mineral spirits. Any experience with this or fast vs slow drying?
heppnerguy
they are NOT talking about mineral spirits but rather Mineral Oil. Big difference here. and as far the the milky mineral spirits go..I would suggest that you leave that alone all together. I have found no one that likes that stuff. If you are going to buy mineral spirits, buy the common clear one Dick heppnerguy GrampaJim
ricklab
Thanks Dick, I kind of suspected it was not a good thing for our use.
NC Scroller
Rick mineral oil can be had at your local pharmacy, Wal-Mart and even sometimes in your local Dollar Store. Look for it where they have laxatives. Yes it works for that too.
ricklab
Just to be clear, the proper thing to use is Mineral OIL, and not Mineral Spirits correct?
scrollerpete
I used Tung oil on all my trivet and so far no problem at all. Yes mineral oil not spirits unless you want them to catch fire. LOL
