WolfyPete
My scroll saw came with pin ended blades but also has adapters to use flat ended blades. What are peoples blades of choice? Having had a look online am I right in thinking there are far more diff flat end blades them pined? What blades size would you use for cutting puzzles, fret work? Do you rate the blades with all round teeth that you don>t need to turn your work when cutting? Thanks in advance for your help Pete amazingkevin
fredfret
I use flat end only even when I had a saw that took both. Simply easier to use for interior cuts and a much wider variety of sizes and types. I recommend you visit Rick Hutchenson's site scrollsaws.com, Mikes workshop selling flying dutchman blades. I use 2 different blades for puzzles in wood thicker than 1/4" a #1 skip tooth for woods 1/4" and under with fine kerf I use Flying dutchnam puzzle blades. There are other mfr.s for both of these blades I just like the results from the Flying Dutchman. Spiral blades have two distinct followings Lovers and Haters. i use them for making portraits and when the project is to large or heavy to turn on my saw. Do some research as to what is available and try some of each type suitable for the projects you are doing. If you make toys from 2x stock #1 blades will not do the job if you make ornaments from single layer 1/8" in stock a #9 is not the blade. Good luck!! fredfret Wichita, Ks WolfyPete
Sparkey
I don't think you can buy pinned blades small enough to do what we need. I use flat end blades. I use Flying Dutchman new 3/0 spiral blades for all of my fretwork. Sorry I have never done a puzzle yet. WolfyPete
ike
I use Olson's flat blades, I tried spiral blades and didn't' like them. I believe the losons last longer and are ready to install with out sanding or unseeing alcohol on them and they don't rust over the Winters months. But each to his own. Clayton717
I use flying Dutchman blades and flat end blades. I hate using the spirals. You won't be able to get to small of inside cuts with a pinned end blade, the pilot hole will need to be pretty big to get the blade in. sullyscroller
heppnerguy
There you go. Question pretty much answered. Flat end blades, whenever you can because of variety of blades available and because you can use a smaller pilot hole with them. Cutting small fret work is not always possible it you are using pinned blades. Spiral blades cut too wide a path to be good for puzzles. The puzzle blades and # 1 or #2 blades with numerous teeth work best for puzzles for me. i kind of prefer the double tooth blades because they are l little less aggressive. WayneMahler
Dick you may have summed this up pretty well. I use #1 flying dutchman for puzzles, although I don't do a lot of them heppnerguy and WolfyPete

WolfyPete
Thanks guys I've opted to try some flat end blades as like you have said they are smaller and better for fret work and designs that you need to drill to get the blade into. I have just ordered some Pegas Skip Tooth Scroll Saw Blade in sizes 3 and 5 and will give them a go.
