Blades

Tommy,  Mike sold his business about a year ago to Wooden Teddy Bear.  You can still order blades through Mikesworkshop.com, but you are actually buying them from Wooden Teddy Bear.  The good news is that WTB seems to be upholding Mike's great service and speedy shipping.  At least that has been my experience with them so far.

Gordster, I agree with the others.  Throw those away and get you some Flying Dutchmen or Olson.  I've used both and they are both great blades and you can't go wrong with either.

Has anyone ever used Vermont American scroll saw blades?

I have been using them because the store is close to me,but

between my delta acting up and breaking these blades,I am almost ready to crack.

I've used them in my beginning scrolling days. The .016 blade was my main blade to use,cut fast and held up .I used then in deltas as that was my  machine of choice back then. When your delta wears out some it hammers the blades loose and then the tension is gone and the blades break almost upon start up.\ from the linking arm that connects the two arms in the back of the machine. No way of lubing them either. Many a happy year was had using these blades as i didn't know about computers then.

Thanks for the info Josh, I knew Mike had sold but didn't realize it was to WTB. Interesting how they can get the blades to you pretty quick but slower on getting patterns to you!

One of the big problems that Delta had with their scroll saws about 15-18 years ago with the blade clamps was caused by the bolts that they used in the clamp. These bolts were too soft and would stretch and bend with use. As they bent, the clamps gradually reached the point where they wouldn't hold the blade end for any time at all. Examine the cross bolts in your blade clamps. If they have a curved shape and/or stretched threads replace them. A better harder bolt of the same size cures this blade clamping problem. My 1990's Delta Q3  40-650 saw had this problem and I talked to Delta about it shortly after buying the saw. Without hesitation they sent me new harder bolts and those new bolts are still in use in those blade clamps today. Replacing the bolts immediately cured the blade clamping problem. If you are having problems with your Delta saw blade clamps and your saw was made in the late 1990-2005 period, try replacing the clamp bolts. I'm certain that your blade clamping problems will be cured for a cost of less than $1.

Gordie, when I first started scrolling many years ago, I used Vermont American blades. That's all I had access to, they were a descent blade, and they did a good job for me. By chance I purchased several gross of different sized Olsen blades, I got them through E-bay. They were a better blades than the Vermont American blades were, but I had a dozen Flying Dutchman blades given to me to try. Well, I tried them, and I was hooked. I liked using them much more than the Olsen's. I found that for me they were a little easier to control, and another deciding factor was that Mike was there to answer questions. I still have a few gross of the Olsen's, and there is a couple of gross of Eberlie #2/0 blades left from the E-bay purchase. I had thought about selling them, but changed my mind. I think I'll use them to teach new scrollers with, they are great for that. Bottom line, I wouldn't be rushing out to buy AV blades, but, if I was in a pinch I would definitely use them.
