Inkscape question - jerry

Don't know how I did it, but I messed up both FILL & Stroke colors.  For example, if I use the rectangle tool, it automatically FILLS white. All the Paint numbers on the R. show 0 ).   If I choose any other color, (i.e. black, red, etc.) the box on the lower left should be all (black)(red).

Instead, the left half of the FILL box is checkerboard, the right half is black, but the fill in my rectangle remains white.

My question is, "How do I get it back to a solid color showing in the lower left box, as opposed to being half checkerboard."

I tried the Inkscape "Help" tab, researched Google, You Tube, Ask.com and consistently come up empty handed.  One suggestion I found was to uninstall Inkscape and download it again.  I have a lot personal patterns stored, as well as a "Go To" page that has pattern shapes I like and can draw from that group anytime in the future.  Would hate to lose my past work.

Right now I have an overwhelming desire to throw the laptop off of a cliff, but Iowa is flat, so that's not an option.

Any & all advice/suggestions would be Greatly desired and appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Jerry, you probably need to open the Fill and Stroke toolbar under Objects at the top of the screen. Select your object (the rectangle) then click on the Fill tab in the Fill and Stroke toolbar. You should see that you have the checkerboard pattern selected. Near the top of that toolbar you should see an X and 4 boxes. The last box is for patterns. Try clicking on the first box. That box should give you a solid color. Then all you need to do is select the color you want.

I hope I didn't confuse you. I can post a screen shot if you want.

Danny,  Thank You for your attempt Sir, however your instructions didn't cure my problem.  The first box you mentioned is labeled FLAT COLOR.  Clicking it changed nothing.  I can still choose any color, but the rectangle stays white and on the little box on the lower left, the left half is still a checkerboard and the right half is whatever color I chose.

Thanks again for your prompt attempt.

Danny,

I tried and failed. Next you posted your screen shot, your SELECTED rectangle was in the canvas, my wasn't, but that shouldn't matter. Went back to Inkscape and the computer FINALLY cured it, per your instructions.

You are cordially invited to come over to our place. We will reward you with free beer all day TODAY.

Thanks again Friend!!
