Hi folks my name is Chris I have recently retired from the building trade I am pleased to say, from 15 years old to 66 is more than enough.

Anyway needless to say I am bored stiff and missing the craik on the sites, I have done all the jobs that have been neglected over the years ( don't we all do that lol ) so I nagged my wife until I got a cheap scroll saw wish I had saved a bit longer and bought a better model but that's life I suppose.

Up to now I have made a lot of dust and not much else I am at a total loss as to what blades to use so any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Apologies in advance if this subject is covered elsewhere on the site but I have not had time to look around properly.

Thanks for reading this Chris

Hi Chris welcome to the Village. You will find a couple threads covering blades in the general scroll sawing section. are you referring to size of blade to use for cutting or type of blade?

I use flying Dutchman blades scroll reverse. mainly 5R & 7R for thicker hard woods and for portrait/fretwork 2R,3R & 5R and sometimes smaller depending on the picture I'm cutting.

Hi Chris, glad to have you in the club.   I just came in from the garage covered in sawdust, but a scrolled out "horse" which was very cool.  I got new patterns today of Elk and Bears and Horses which are very nice.   Colorado folks love this stuff.  I sell it at a couple of stores.  I use mostly 20TPI blades and sometimes 33TPI depending on the project.  I get all my blades from www.scolleronline.com .  This hobby is addictive.  I've had two 16 inch scroll saws and wore them out. I have a 26"RBI Hawk now that I've had for about 8 years and I absolutely love it.

It takes a week to deliver and obviously there are others which I'm sure you will be informed about by the others on the forum which is what makes this forum great for help and info.

 Have fun. Roly

W elcome  Chris.  you are on the right track. The right blades is a major key to successful scrolling. there is a large variety of blades out there and you  jsut need to try a few different ones because it seems everyone has the 'perfect blade' for their own use but almost everyone has a different choice. So give them a try and take your time cutting. One hint from me, don't try to make your blades last forever. A dull blade can easily destroy an hours work. Change your blade when you discover that all of a sudden you seem to be needing to push your blade to make a cut. the blade should cut fairly easily through the wood.

Welcome to the forum, glad you found us.  Lots of threads on here about blades, but it really come down to what you want to saw and what works best for you.  There are some good articles at www.Mikesworkshop.com which are worth reading.  Heppnerguy is right, blades are an expendable item.  They get dull, they break.  I by the ones I like by the "gross".
