FranMike Harley
My Wife and I were in the Mall the other night, strolling around, window shopping. We both like to go into those "Country" type stores in the Malls. As we're walking around this one particular store, my Wife says to me: "Hon.. Can't you make signs like this on your scroll saw now ?" Why Yes.. Yes I can.. Downloaded the pattern from Mr. Steve Good. 3/4" Cherry (not stained yet). This is the biggest piece I've ever done so far, coming in at 15" x 5 1/2".. My Wife already has a place picked out for it - Kitchen.. She hinted that I should make different signs now.. her... dgman
Hey Mike, great work on that! If it's Cherry, you don't need a stain. Just soak it in some oil of your choice ( I use a 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits), wipe off the excess and let dry. After dry, topcoat with a finish of your choice. The oil brings out the natural color and grain of the wood, and Cherry has a beautiful color that will darken over time. You did a great job scrolling that. FranMike Harley

I'm also happy to hear that the room she picked out was displayed in the kitchen rather than the bedroom (laughter is good for the soul)! Thanks for sharing!God Bless! In my last trip to Home Depot, I saw Odorless Mineral Spirits and Boiled Linseed oil, both by Klean-Strip.. Are those good enough for me to use 50/50 mix ? A video on Youtube also threw in the same ratio of Minwax Wipe-On Poly to the mineral spirit and linseed oil mix. Does it make sense to add them like that or add the poly afterwards ? I have lots to learn in this area...

I have not added any poly to to my mix, I prefer a spray on Laqcuer. The MinWax wipe on poly is basiclly a poly/mineral spirits mix already, so I wouldn't use it in a mix. wombatie
That looks perfect, love the look of the cherry. Always test your finish on some scrap, that way you don't ruin the piece that you have just worked on if it fails.
