edward
I want to cut some birdhouses on my Dewalt, but there is not much clearance between the blade and the wood, which is 1 1/2" does anyone have that problem or is it me. the thumb screw seems to get in the way. Just curious thanks edward
jerry1939
Hi Friend. IF it is just the thumb screw causing the problem, one suggestion would be to take it to a hardware store. Use a nut to determine the diameter and the number of threads per inch. Using that same nut as a guide, find a cap screw that fits it. Use the cap screw as a temporary "fix" while doing your current project. Hope this helps. jerry
dgman
Hey Edward, the mini birdhouses require a 1-1/4" blank. I cut these on my DeWalt all the time. In fact, I just cut abou t 70 of them. Have you made any adjustments to your saw to stop a banging noise? This adjustment brings the top blade clamp closer to the table. Denny Knappen
I use an EX21, but I cut to size on the DeWalt. There is no problem with 1 1/2" stock. I like Jerry's idea as a temporary fix.
heppnerguy
the problem that i see with Jerry's fix, is the thumb screw has an end that pivots and helps keep the thumb screw aligned with the blade as it travels up and down. I keeps pressure off the blade, or something like that, (not sure how to explain it ). I am not sure how changing the thumbscrew would effect the cutting or the blade. Others understand this way better than I do but I thought i would throw that out and see what other comments come up Dick heppnerguy
bandaideman
Sorry edward I have cut the birdhouses with the dewalt no problem with the thumb screw. I have cut the smaller and larger houses. Not sure what is going on.
dgman
Hey Edward, are you using a clamping/ cutting jig? By using a cutting jig, your hand stays away from the blade clamp. I will post a picture of mine if you want.
edward
I do use a clamping jig that I made, maybe my problem is that I been using 1/12" instead of 1/14" wood. edward
KurtP
Steve Good has some plans of a jig for compound cuts. This is what I use. http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.ca/2012/07/scroll-saw-compound-cut-clamp.html In his instructions he shows drawing lines on the wood but i just attached the pattern to the wood and cut it. Lucky2
Edward, I think all you need to do, is to use thinner stock. Try either 1&1/4"or 1&1/8" stock, you don't need the piece of wood to be much larger than the pattern. If using smaller wood doesn't solve the problem, then just minimize the pattern so it fits the piece of wood. Len
dgman
I have two different sizes of the cutting jigs. One is just right for the mini Birdhouses and one size for the birds. As you can see by using the jig, your fingers stay away from the thumb screw.

TerryD
Hi Edward, I think I can help you out. Firstly I checked my Dewalt and with my thumb screw tightened it is horizontal to the table. If the set screw opposite your thumb screw is off by a 1/4 turn it will point the long end down interfering with your cut. Try backing off the set screw a little so that your thumb screw can tighten horizontally. I noticed the set screw wasn't fitting properly when I had to purchase a new blade holder. As long as it doesn't damage your blades you should be good to go. By the way my saw measures 2 -1/8" from table top to the bottom of the blade holder at its lowest point. ( just in case this means something as well ). Terry
Denny Knappen
Good post Terry. I forgot about checking the set screw.
