Scrappile
I have had this pattern for some time, and have been really wanting to do it. I have been waiting to get some more bark sided basswood to use for it but I got impatient and grabbed a piece of cherry I had and use it. Not happy with how it turned out. The wood is just too dark for this pattern. So I thought I could add some color with feathers, but I don't think the feathers go with the dark wood either. I was going to attach the feathers with some artificial sinew I have left over from my kayak building days. I like the feathers, will save them for something else. So I will re-cut this pattern when I have my basswood. Oh, this is a Charles Dearing pattern, BTW he still has a sale of his patterns going on. firstmuller, New Guy, lawson56 and 1 other
Ron Johnson
Terrific cutting of a very fine pattern Paul. As a suggestion (depending thickness of wood used) I'd try placing the portrait within a reddish brown or ebony frame with a white matt. Too nice of a portrait to set aside. Maybe others will have suggestions to help give you ideas to consider. SCROLLSAW703 and Scrappile
Dan
Excellent job Paul! I've done the same thing...just wanted to cut something and wasted a nice piece of burl and there was so much going on in the grain and dark color that it was hard to see the cutting. Oh, well, live and learn. I don't know if it will help but maybe use some rope to frame the picture. Just a thought. Scrappile

heppnerguy
I wish i was good enough to be disappointed about a piece of work like this, for any reason. It is a very beautiful one as are all of your pieces Dick heppnerguy Scrappile

Scrappile
Ha, thanks so much for the comments, but, you people always surprise me. I thought I would read. "ya, you are right, the picture sucks, but the feathers are nice". Been sitting here thinking, what to do with the feathers. I like them. I am thinking of how I could make some beads, either on the lathe or scroll saw, brad some sinew, mix the beads and feathers and make my Grandson a Native American necklace. I also have the Kokopelli deer antler thing I could add to it. Is that a dumb idea? He probably would not wear it but it could hang in his bedroom. He is going to be 5 soon. Well you could always paint it .Painting cherry would be a sin though.a two tone frame may take away some of the darkness you don't like ,walnut and pine ?Incredible patience on this beauty .funny your avatar name is far ,very far from the work you produce. Thanks for showing ! Dave Monk
Totally awesome job. Personally I like a bit darker wood. dave Scrappile
wombatie
That is awesome........but sorry I am not a lover of the feathers.. I love the dark wood and I like Dan's idea of a rope frame. But yes an awesome cutting. Marg Lucky2 and Scrappile
Rob
I think that is beautiful full stop. (period). The cherry is gorgeous. I like the feathers, but don't think they sit well with the piece, adding a bit of a distraction from your excellent work. Ninuninu
Hi Paul. This is such a lovely piece of work, both in the cutting and the detail. Sorry but I have to disagree with you... the slightly darker colour sets it off pretty well to me. It gives it a sort of "late evening" look. Although I usually use much lighter wood myself, this darker shade gives it a certain character that just adds to the beauty. Oh and by the way, although I love feathers and think they are great, I would use them in framing this! Just my opinion. Great job. Tony Scrappile
JohnR48
I'd give it a couple of coats of Watco Danish Oil, then a backer and narrow frame of semi gloss black. Remember that cherry will darken over time and especially if exposed to sunlight. Unfortunately I would do away with the feathers. They distract from the picture that is beautifully cut. daveww1
Awesome job, it looks great in the cherry. Scrappile
RangerJay
That is a stunning piece of work - the pattern and cutting are terrific, the cherry and its grain gives it unique life - whatever you decide to use for accents (the feathers are looking great) will make it a one-of-a-kind piece. Lots to be really proud of here. Jay Scrappile
Denny Knappen
That is a terrific cutting and pattern. I also suggest frame and mat, but maybe a very light tan mat. Scrappile

Travis
I think it looks amazing. Put it in a black frame with a black backer and get it ready to be displayed as art. Then put it in the closet for a week or so then pull it out. I bet you'd be pretty happy with it. I think you're stuck with tunnel vision right now and can only see what "should have been." But in a week, you'll see how great it is. BTW, I love the feathers too. Just reduce it to 2 or 3 so it's just an accent to the picture and not the focus and I think that would work really well too. Nicely done! Scrappile and WayneMahler
Paul hd
Hi Paul. Its a fantastic piece of work. Feathers not need. Scrappile
JimErn
Awesome work. I would get different color (tan, gold are my initial thoughts) poster board and put each color behind it, take a pic of each, and wait a couple of days and look at the pics. I think either would look good. I like the subdued look of the work, not everything has to be in your face. A plaque I made to honor my father is Red Oak with a black backer. Lose the feathers though, they distract from some outstanding work. Scrappile
Lucky2
Paul, I just can't imagine cutting a piece that looks this nice, and not being satisfied with it. I think it looks fantastic, I don't think that a basswood blank could look this nice. But, like the rest of us, if it's not what we wanted, we get disappointed with the outcome. I think that you'd be pleased with how much you could get for it, if you decided to sell it. Sometimes we're our own worst enemies. cynbone
Paul, if you are criticizing this piece, I doubt you will be satisfied with anything anyone would offer. This is masterful, period. Scrappile
LarryEA
I see swirls of sand and sun beams in that cherry wood. You did a great job cutting and I like the cherry Scrappile
stoney
Yeah Paul we are our own worst critics. That is a beautiful piece of work. I personally wouldn't care for the feathers and believe it distracts from the overall quality of the cutting. I would use a non imposing frame of some sort. I think the quality and detail is what I would want to be the focal point. JMHO Scrappile
