Hello everyone! My name is Loren (yes that is a girls name but I am a guy..lol)  I'm 42 years old living in Phoenix AZ for now getting ready to move back to Michigan this summer. Im brand new to the fun and exciting world of scroll sawing, I got into it because I quit my job as a Mechanical Engineer to be a stay-at-home dad to our 2 and one on the way kids (OMG this is the hardest job I've ever had) but after 2 years of doing this, I started to go nuts and in desperate need of something to do other than laundry, cleaning and acting like a child everyday. I wanted to find something that didn't take up a lot of space and didnt make a bunch of noise, I had always loved woodworking and had a full shop back home in Michigan,So I bought my first scroll saw 2 weeks ago, and I am hooked and in LOVE, I've made 2 projects that got rave reviews, Ive broken 2 projects several hours in to them...ugh! and am finishing one now (except I messed up the staining so im trying to figure out how to fix it). I look forward to meeting you all and learning all I can.

I have a porter cable 18" variable speed scroll saw, I think i'm having a little trouble with it, the blade seems to have a lot of side to side action to it and it makes it hard to line u on a line but maybe this is normal, I don't know, I've only made 2 projects so far and I have broken 2 others, I just finished one tonight, waiting for the glue to dry and I will post a picture of it. as far as what I like to cut? right now, I'm cutting anything, trying different skill level patterns, I really love outdoorsy stuff hunting/fishing animals, I also like christmas decoration, bowls, candle sticks, boxes etc.....

Hey Loren, welcome to the Village! Two things to look at. First, make sure the table is a perfect 90° to the blade. Don't trust the gauge. Use a small square, or a small protractor, or even the side of a credit card to check that the table is square to the blade.

Second, make sure you have proper tension on the blade. You want to hear a high "ping" when you pluck the blade. If you hear a "clunk", it's not tight enough.

So, come on in and join the fun!

Loren,

So glad to see that you logged on to The Village. This is a family thing, here. Welcome to 'The Family'. I am here to help you in any way that I can, Be Sure to check out ' the University' part of the forum for some great tutorials posted by our illustrious leader, Travis. You will soon understand why we refer to this site as our world wide family, I hope you can find the time to get to scrolling because once you get to meeting people it is difficult to NOT log on every day and see what everyone is up to. Check out our free pattern library and explore everything you can stumble on to. There is so much here and a lot of talented people too.I am not sure why they let me on here, maybe just someone to poke fun at.Oh, go to the 'coffee house'. it is under the forum most of the way down. This is where you people hang just to have fun and get to chat with one another.  They don't let me in the coffee house very often because I am too messy. Glad you are here
